Formula 1's Europe Problem

Показать описание
For so long, Europe dominated the Formula 1 calendar but as time goes on, the sport is drifting further and further away from the continent. With the sport focusing on more races in the United States, and the endless cash available in the Middle East, European Formula 1 Grand Prix are facing shorter contract extensions and uncertain futures.

I don't really think that F1 leaving Europe is the problem but replacing the classic tracks with some idiotic street tracks is.

F1 leaving Spa would be like Indycar leaving Indianapolis; a modern sport without connections to it's stories past

F1 can build and race in many new tracks as they want, they just need to keep the classics, like Silverstone, Monza, Monaco, Spa, Suzuka and Interlagos

A real shame we no longer have French or German GPs anymore.

Germany is a real shame as they have 2 good tracks. France less so, it's a pity they haven't ever had a good permanent home

My biggest fear is F1 over investing based on inflated growth and imploding once the novelty wares off. I prefer a smaller but longstanding sport over a booming sport which crashes burns due to relying on unrealistic infinite growth models.

I’m an American, but the only track from the US that I want on the calendar is COTA. We’ll see how Vegas is this year. The actual race there wasn’t terrible last year, but it doesn’t change the fact that the track itself is awful. Miami is well, we all know what we think about Miami don’t we? 🤷‍♂️

saying that spa may not provide amazing racing is one of the worst take ever

I really hope not, losing some of the amazing tracks we have in Europe for cheap American street circuits just sells the soul of the sport in my opinion.

Formula 1 doesn't have a Europe problem. It has a USA problem. Formula 1 is racing, not sports entertainment.

I wish they would divide the season into stages, Stage Europe, Stage America, Stage Asia, Stage Middle East. Would be better for the environment

Europe has F1 fans, America has drive to survive fans

Forgot to point out that everything changed drastically with Liberty Media "taking over the show".

I found it interesting that you referred to other locations by continent or region, but chose to ignore Canada and Mexico being a part of the same North American market as the USA.

It will kill the sport if they go and remove core tracks from the sport. If they get rid of the classic European tracks, the sport will die for me. I'm sick of them pandering so much to the US.

F1 should expand in relevant countries in Asia, Africa and South America, countries that actually care and hold history in the sport. Would love to see an Argentine GP or a Thai GP especially for Alex Albon

Truly, what makes F1 so beautiful is the fact that it has withstood the test of time, world war, and pandemic. The whole operation is an ongoing work of art and history. Many of the world’s best and most beautiful nations all contributing to its story of excellency in scenery, people, engineering, athleticism, emotion, ambition, organisation, and spectacle. Losing its roots would make it more like freestyle BMX and less like the Olympics. And I say that as someone who has ridden BMX for 25 years of my 29 year life.

You sum it up at the 7 minute point - A show and money. Which for most traditional fans is just not what it should be about. No problem becoming global, but the sudden focus on the Arabian peninsular is a BIG let down. Four races for a bundle of countries that contributes nothing to the sport is bad news. And to top it all, they have taken our beloved Pre-Season Testing away from us.
Could you imagine this happening in Football or Baseball?

You're final comment "F1 no longer relies on Europe" is just PLAIN WRONG. For short term tracks and gimmicks perhaps, but for real long term investment in the sport - sorry mate, way off the mark. (Teams, Academies, Drivers, Engineering, Feeder Categories, Infrastructure, Culture, History, Tyres A very naïve point of view.

I say let them take away the European tracks and let's see how long F1 will last. If they also take Interlagos and Suzuka away they'd just crash and burn in a couple of years. When Perez retires, Mexican fans will also stop watching, just like Chinese fans once Zhou is completely out of the sport. The USA "fans" are only loud on social media and only are around because of Netflix, once the idiotic series dies they will go back to not caring about F1. As for the middle east, there are no real fans, they are just there to flaunt money and nothing more.

3:28 there is an error in the video. After the disaster of the 2005 Indianapolis Grand Prix, F1 did return to the US in 2006 and 2007. It was between 2008-2012 where there was a hiatus until COTA was built
