The last time I saw my Grandpa on my Mom's side he had bloody foamy saliva around his mouth and nose. He had severe lung problems as well as everything else, I figured it was from his lungs. He passed away that night. Thank you, Julie for all you do!!

I sat with my mum as she died. In her last few hours she just had a little ‘dewdrop’ of saliva accumulate on her lower lip. It wasn’t alarming, and was easily wiped. I was quite glad to see it because there was a lot of mouth breathing, and I was glad to know her mouth wasn’t dry.

My husbands brain eventually herniated (uncal herniation) due to metastatic melanoma tumors that took up space in the cranium & cerebellum. Normally immediately fatal he continued to actively die for a further 12 hours during which time major quantities of mustard coloured exudate flowed from his nose & mouth. It was brutal. I maintained his dignity by tending to his cares & kept wiping away the fluids in hospice. I hope he has peace. He was only 58.

YouTube suggested a video by chezzthezomb it was a video of the death rattle. It sounds like chains rattling. It was unsettling. But the video supposedly shows his spirit leaving his body seconds after the last breath. I would like your opinion on the video.

Wouldn't a suction device at the bedside help caregivers and family remove the secretions safely, and avoid aspiration?
It would also help with providing oral care.
The patient would certainly benefit physically & emotionally.
Could hospice nurses teach family members how to do this safely, without compromizing the patient's O² saturation levels?

Is it acid coming up? Because I have acid reflux and that would be horrific. Good Lord I hope it isn't acid.

@hospicenursejulie Please, how long this phase lasts? And what if the patient is having horror in eyes, trying with hands to catch people around? It reminds suffocation with some fluid.... Is it normal during active dying?

When my mom was in her last hours she had really dark stuff coming out of her mouth. Not a lot. But it was definitely within the last 2 hours til she died. Not sure what that was.

I found my partner who had passed from a heart attack . I thought he was still sleeping and when he didn't respond to me telling him it was time to get up for church, I tried to wake him and he was unresponsive. He had been sleeping in his normal position on his stomach and I flipped him over and he had this bubbly saliva... is this something that happens after he passed too? Is it immediate?
