BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor Pedal Demo

Thank the BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor for what you're not hearing in this video: noise. I intentionally dialed-up a very noisy signal chain with high-output and gain as well as single-coil pickups to show how flawlessly the NS-2 handles it. The built-in loop allows you to isolate your noisiest pedals and put the noise reduction where you need it. Kudos to BOSS for making another pedal that does exactly what it's supposed to.

I was watching this video, having accidentally muted my computer speakers. I thought this was some kind of sick joke.

This is an awesome noise suppressor pedal, period. I tried switching to more expensive units and the NS2 ability to handle suppression at even the lowest volume set it apart.

It's now 30 years old as it came out in 1987. It's on my board since 1993 and it's great as it has a mute switch plus output to power other pedals.

Recently got one and it is tremendously good. I have a Boss CS-3 and BD-2w in the Send/Return loop outputting into a Fender Stereo Chorus then off to the clean amp. To say the NS-2 was noticeable when it got added into my chain is a massive understatement. I've owned a couple of noise suppressors, mostly inline with multi-effects boxes, this is an evolution ahead of those.

I had really good results running it in front of my 6505+ with a tube screamer too.

I have the NS-2 guys. It rocks! No doubt. Super worth it

Important to mention that Mute mode also works when the pedal switch is turned off (with power on, of course). This is a great feature!

yea, I actually run this noise Suppressor post delay pedal, the Space Echo, which is also Boss and works great for me.

after trying this pedal in a local shop, i have found its most important weakness.

Even when i plugged my guitar straight to the NS2 with all the dirt pedals in the loop (its purpose is to activate the gate just by the attack of your guitar, to be able to set the threshold much lower => have a more natural gate effect), i had to raise the threshold knob everytime i turned on another pedal. and here is why: the threshold knob not only acts as the threshold but also as the noise reduction knob. the lower you set the threshold, the more dynamic you have but the less noise it cuts. since you have a lot of noise you have to kill it by turning up the threshold and it will result in chopped off notes and a very unnatural gate, which is the opposite of what the effects loop as been designed for.

Thats why I'm considering on buying the new TC electronic Sentry, which also has multi band gate and software tweaking options BUT more importantly has the threshold control and the noise reduction "damp" control seperate so that you can control these things individually, that would result is no matter how noisy the noise floor is on the noise gate effects loop is, you are able to kill ALL the noise and still keep the threshold super low just to sense when the guitar is played or not. game changer in my opinion

oops, you neglected to say that it can power other pedals

Awesome because I have 2 Electro-Harmonix HUM Debuggers & They Work! BUT Now I Know that there is a HISS Debugger with BOSS....And once again Boss does it Like a BOSS ! Thanks

I had my first one for about 18 years then it failed. I have a newer one, used. For the most part it works great. I used mine for years behind my rack to quiet my ADA MP-1. I ran it more pedal volume, the used another pre-amp Tube Works Realtube II with it for years. I had a strange issue today where it was acting like it was bypassed with sound running through with noise. I unplugged it, checked all the gain pedal connections. I found an issue with a cable after the loop which doesn't explain why it was acting bypassed. Now it is acting normal. I am thinking of trying the TC Electronic Sentry as a more modern multi-band version. My rehearsal space is noisey so, I actually have a stereo noise gate running as well. It is not as high of a threshold, since most of it is taken out with the NS-2. I think the NS-2 works best with the loop feature and have all high gain and medium gain preamp pedals in that loop. Then the output to your modulation then delay and reverbs last.

If i only use NS-2, does it remove noises maden by the gain of the amp?

I have also put my modulation in the loop. Very good

Can you please tell me specifically where you had your guitar going and the delays/reverbs I'm so confused I keep getting a high pitched squeal when I'm playing

Does it do the same thing with buzzy single coils?

Hello, i was wondering if I could use the NS-2 both as a noise gate and a buffer, i mean i know it can do both but my setting is a bit odd (i think).
My actual setting is: Guitar -> Wah -> Comp -> Amp (On which i use both clean and drive channels) -> FX loop send -> Chorus -> Phase -> Flanger -> Trem -> Delay -> Reverb -> FX loop return. I have experienced both tone sucking due to long cable runs in the effects loop (my amp's FX loop is not buffered) AND some noise. What I have tried for now, is using a Boss pedal, just as buffer, right after the FX loop's send using a patch cable and before the long cable that goes to my Chorus pedal. It works well with the Boss buffer and I got my tone back, but i haven't got rid of the noise.

So hear me out, what if i get a Boss NS-2, and place it right after the FX loop's send (where the Boss pedal is now), then, from the NS-2's send, i run a long cable to my Chorus -> Phase -> Flanger -> Tremolo and back to the NS-2's return, then from the NS-2's output, i go to the Delay -> Reverb and back to my amp's FX Loop's return. I would leave the NS-2 ON all the time.

Would that work? Would i get rid of both the noise and tone sucking? In other words, are both the Input/Output and the Send/Return of the NS-2 buffered?

I hope I was clear enough

Cheers
