Why are GPUs so Expensive? Previously we looked at how AMD is raising MSRP prices on mid-range cards this generation however, the street prices are way higher. In this video we investigate the source of the higher prices and it's not what nVidia or AMD want you to believe. Is gamer demand really that high? What nVidia didn't say in their recent earning call was very telling.

Videos in this series:
What Happened to the mid-Range GPU?

Will We See the mid-Range GPU below $300?

What is Driving the High Price of GPUs

Will Intel ARC GPUs Save PC Gaming? When?

I would encourage you to read the transcript of the earnings call to get a sense of the narrative that is being pushed by nVidia related to gamers and demand. I've added a link to that transcript in the description. And the narrative coming from AMD is very similar. If you're interested into why, then please leave a comment and I can make a follow-up video exploring the implications of what would happen if they didn't push that narrative.

It also really bugs me that so many tech tubers are actively trying to justify AMD & Nvidias planned and continued price hikes.

Thanks for this video and your effort. I bought a used mining rx580 just before the pandemic for gaming, and now it has died.. but today still can't afford a gpu. I wanna buy new and low profile.. but it is annoying even after these many years. Even after Ethereum has finally switched to PoS..

Yep, might as well just wait for the next generation of Cards to come out and buy those instead of this current generation.

By that time DDR5 and a whole host of other advancements will be making their way into the market so I might just save up 3 grand for an entirely new gaming rig altogether.

My 1080ti and 3900xt have done quite well but the newest coming out just hammer my poor 1080ti, poor I use figuratively as during its launch it was considered an expensive card lol, $800 is a drop in the bucket compared to today's prices.

Anyways, Ryzen 6000 series CPUS, DDR5 and the next lineup of card from AMD and Nvidia should be good in terms of raw performance.

Kinda wondering on how much I have to save $4, 000 has to be enough no?

Great video. I came to the same conclusion after watching a bunch of other videos that covered this topic. Big youtubers even refuse to mention mining as one of the problem. There is certainly higher demand from gamers. A lot of the people sold their old gpus to buy new ones. But miners swallowed the whole used market (you can find thousands of pcs selling on used market without dedicated gpu or igpu/apu), and anything new they can get.
I really think 50%+ of gpus (probably non LHR) are sold directly to mining farms, and gamers are left to fight with small miners and scalpers for the rest.

What I really don't understand is why our GPU cards so expensive to start with? I'm not talking about supply and demand I'm talking about that in general just a graphics card cost more than a motherboard and CPU combined. Don't they have semiconductors and all sorts of chips and fans and such? Does it really cost hundreds of dollars to manufacture just one component of a system? Maybe it does I just don't understand how something so small, no matter how important it is to a machine, material cost wise still cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Great video.
Demands wont be met because of greed... There will always be a new coin to mine, and there will always be miners....

So basically to a miner a GPU = Money printer

Hopefully Intel can bring some good GPU's to the entry market. Hate the fact that it's so hard to get in PC Gaming these days. Nice Video!

What some don't understand is even home miners buy GPUs 6 or more at a time. Of course demand is insane. And LHR affects only etherium. Anything else is full hash rate.

if you check the STEAM hardware GPU chart of the users doesn't reflect the GPU sold AMD and NVIDIA telling us

You can game at 4K with the Radeon cards, I do it.

Much more like Nvidia/AMD, as the current duo plays of the GPU market, are sort of cornering the market besides whatever their officially stated reasons, and screwing the consumers, if they can sell one product with 2x, 3x or even more profits, of course good for them! The question will be if Intel will be the white knight or not, but hope it at least gives a try. And just hope the greed of Nvidia/AMD not backfire, besides the miner thing. They are supposed to put much much more products out, but high price with few product make them wonderful profits.

Now the only question that i can think of is when etherum or w/e goes into that stage to not be able to mine on gpu's anymore is that gonna start fixing one of the gpu shortages or ppl are gonna find another stupid crypto currency to mine and basically make gpu's be a distant dream for budget gamers in the future lol 200-400 gpu market is basically dead and will be for the next few years giving last year of changes (not much changed) i've been looking for a gpu since november of last year and regreted ever since not buying a 5700 xt or 2070 super cuz i thought EH its close to a new gpu generation might aswell just wait and see...the irony how that backfired in just 2 months

How much of it is from scalping? It is already obvious that it is a huge problem. If nVidia would continue to sell to the scalpers maybe we should boycot them for a while until they change their tune! I wouldn't care so much if the cards were just $30 items but these are expensive to begin with.

unless you cant mine on the INTEL GPU nothing will change

Seems like governments need to regulate mining then.. maybe? Idk how it all works but it feels like when league of legends first came out and was broken as fuck in the first two years or so as compared to now after all the updates over the years.

So this just mean gamer who build this industry and always support for really long time are now just a second class people and miner who just come in less than 20 years are now more important and favorable VIPish people. Well well. See you in the RTX60xx then fuck all current gen and 2 or 3 next gen and fuck all games too. If you don't want gamer then I will stop buying game right now.
