What if your x on both side are different numbers how would you know how to subtract? Example is 5x and 3x would you take 3x - 5x or 5x - 3x?

What does it mean if your left with just the number with variable like for example what if I was left with 4x how many solutions then?
Edit:I’m pretty sure it means no solution!
