I just got an assignment where there are no 0's in the equation. For example: _x(squared) - _x = _ - _x. Is this a fluke??

I don't know what it's so hard for my teacher to explain it like this in multiple 50 minute classes but khan academy taught me in 7 minutes

I am told again and again that it's illegal to divide by zero.
Then I'm told that I can factorize a rational expression by using the zero product property on numerator and the *denominator.*

How does this contradiction work?
