These tests are exposing manufacturer’s neglect for rear passenger safety. Hope iihs test will motivate them to pay more attention here.

That side airbag killed the rear occupant

To be fair, this model has been around since 2017, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the current iteration of the CX-5 is still based on the original model that came out back in 2011, which honestly doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Hopefully with this new tougher test, manufacturers will make their vehicles more safer for the occupants, especially the rear passengers.

I saw a rear crash test for this car, and the seats reclined all the way back. This problem seems to be ignored by the industry and regulators. I first saw a news story about that problem in the 90's.

I'm really concerned that the CX-5 got a poor, they need to step up their game. This completely aced the updated side but this, needs a severe improvement.

I've had my Signature for about 9 months and in that time I've seem some nasty CX-5 crash pics where the occupants walked away. Very happy I bought one.

I can’t understand why they don’t come with rear seatbelt pre tensioners as standard. They do over here in the UK. It’s really not good and manufacturers should be installing them on every seat in every car.

On the IIHS website under the new updated test it says this test applies to 2021-2022 models. Was there a change in the rear of the CX-5 in 2023 that made the test not applicable, or was there some other reason why under 2023 this test is not listed?

The Mazda CX5 has rear seatback reclining as standard! And it seems as if the seatbacks are in the reclined position here. Maybe that's what caused the submarining?

@IIHS Is there a way to get clarification whether Mazda has indicated some change for the 2023 CX-5?. The IIHS website shows the new updated applying to 2021-2022 models and not 2023 models. The 2023 CX-5 scored a Top Safety Pick + just a few months ago. I have a 2023 CX-5 on order.

Was there an update to the CX 5? The top pick information on the IIHS seems to have everything as good now.

Will there be an updated moderate overlap test on the 2022 facelift CX-5?

So I was just watching a video of a European crash test of the 2020 CX-5 (same generation) and the rear seatbelts in the European model have pre-tensioners. No such feature is fitted to the US-spec model crashed here.

@IIHS Is there going to be another test for CX-5 released in 2022 or 2023 ? I would like to purchase the car but only if they fixed the problem. Thanks.

disappointing from Mazda. Would''ve been nice to know to some degree what caused it to dip to "poor". It seems almost like the seat belts failed?

Why is updated moderate overlap result not available for 2023 models?

I think the links to the full ratings in the descriptions of the videos aren't working.

Needs belt load limiter and pretension

Its mostly because of the rear seatbelt. Lots of manufacturers got poor that year to force them to update rear safety in newer models.
