The most common issue w brimmed hats..
folks set them down on the shelf w the weight on the brim, and the brim softens and droops. (especially when wet, the weight of the water causes it to droop and when it dries, it dries flat, like the tabletop or shelf its sitting on)
Even folks who know better do this, we all do it by accident occasionally,.
I see the symptoms in customers' hats, and they deny it,"Oh! I NEVER lay it on it's brim!"
We all do, I do. Hats get worn, like shoes..its inevitable, if u wear it, it shows wear.

"Prevention" is best, keep the hat hung up or upside down. So the brim "floats" in air.

But..
If u want to try and fix it, it's not easy, but it's possible...each case is a little different, felt quality is the big factor.

The bottom line is this..
store your hats the correct way..upside down on the crown, brim flipped back up.
or
hang it up
on a hook, nail or coat rack,
w the brim snapped back up
..even if u wear the brim snapped down, u store it snapped up.

Do this all the time, wet or dry, at home, the office, bars and restaurants..
all the other stuff will take care of itself,
That's all I do,and my hats look good.
don't worry how u hold it, or take it off, j
ust store it correctly
. it's enough.

I know, because I never, ever have time to steam my own hats, I never do..its true, maybe 1-2x a year if I'm lucky.

My brims all look perfect on the ones that I store correctly.

My green hat and my teal blue one, I wear those two every day, for years and years..
I store them on a hook in the wall, or upside down on the desk, they are as good as the day I bought them,
BUT..the ones that I don't really wear look wavy and soft,old..like that lavender hat.
Why?..
..I stack them in piles on shelves, which I know is wrong, but I have no room for them..or I'm lazy.
The difference is like night and day, big difference.

Store them right, and u will avoid all this reshaping nonsense.

We are the ones who screw up our own hats, simply because nobody educated us in basic hat care..

Learn to store them right and prevent it from getting oft and out of shape,
it's way easier than trying to fix it by hand.

If u have a decent hat and can't get results this way,
u can have a brim steamed by me,free.
Or re-flanged in our workshop in a more lasting way. Both include a good hat box,
Blocking in the workshop is for older or totalled hats, when steaming just won't get results anymore.
.it's way more intensive, the same process they use when they manufacture the hat.

It's better to learn how to prevent this cycle from starting,
Buy a good quality fur felt hat with a brim that snaps nicely, raw edged brims are usually,
(but not always) more prone to floppiness btw

if it has trouble snapping from the start, it may be shop-worn, or poorly made, don't buy it.
try another one in the same size, or another style. Snap brim hats should snap.

be aware that soft felt hats like "lite felt" crush-able wool hats,
when u add a soft brim to a short, tiny brim,
it will not snap well,
some tiny brim hats are meant to stay up,

That's how my St. Stephens Barbisio is. The style and process for the color makes the hat not very snappy and so when snapped is rather flat. Nice to know its a style and process not a defunct.

I’ve been watching all of your videos and have now reshaped 4 fedoras that had become a bit wild. The strong hold hairspray works brilliant. I’ve got a Lock & Co fedora that I assume has been shellaced so use this as my guide. Love your craftsmanship 😎

Thank you so much for this video. I looked everywhere to find out how I could firm up a fedora hat made of felt that arrived in the mail with a soft floppy brim. Hairspray and a fan... Who knew?

Hi Kevin I love your videos, I am in the UK & also have a large head 63cm
I would love to wear a hat, but can't find a style to suit me, I always think hats look great on everyone but me Can you offer any advice on what to try please?
There are no hat shops in my area and due to my size I am limited to buying off the internet
Thanks again for your great video collection. Dave

thanks alot! i have a hat that i bought online that got out of shape when they shipped it, been using it with the weird shape ever since, after trying the tips in this video it's better at least :D i'll give this another try in the near future, for now im fine with my slightly less oddly shaped hat :p (im somewhat afraid if i try to shape it perfectly over and over again i'll ruin it)

Can a flange wear out? Is it better to keep the flange up or down?

I have 2 Borsalino Marco's (the downbrim crusher's). I really like em. But i've been wondering if JJ's workshop could convert the brim on one to a standard Fedora(snap type brim to wear either way? Whadda ya think? Thanks again for these Vids. Always very informative.
