In Dubai, we have fridges outside mosques, where we can put leftover food in the fridge and the less fortunate take anything they need.

I work in a 5 star hotel restaurant, every day we have to throw away food that could've last me a week! It aches my heart, we have no choice but to do it. We're talking about expensive cheese, fruits, salami, smoked salmon and many more!

When you live in a third world country you'll immediately be taught the importance of food. You don't ever _dare_ to waste what you're given.

This is so interesting. Just makes me remember when I use to work at Panda Express in Tulsa. After our shift was over there was so much food left over and we were not allowed to give it away or take it home. We had to throw away the extra food. Which is equivalent to 5lb+ of food and it makes me sad.

People just care about money and they would legit let rats or let it decompose before feeding those who cant afford it and thats a sad reality....

I went to an “all you can eat” buffet once which had a great system. You could refill your plate as many times as you liked, and there was a set price BUT you paid extra for every gramme of food you didn’t eat. That means that people didn’t fill their plate and left half of it sitting there when they left, but they took a little and went back for seconds (or more) if they wanted more. It’s the little details that matter when it comes to food waste.

Just to let you hate companies that throw food instead of just letting employees and the homeless have it. Heartless bastards

I'm so glad I was taught not to waste food. My father always say that the food is fruit of the labors of farmers so we should appreciate their labor and also be reminded that we are blessed with a meal unlike those who cannot get food on their plate. I wish my friends could also see that when they waste their food.

A big part of this food waste problem is how we buy food. In the US and Canada, cities are spread out so you make long drives to these massive grocery stores at the edge of town, and because of that, you tend to stock up for the next week or two weeks. As a result a lot of that food ends up going to waste. It's unsurprising that the US and Canada have the biggest food waste problems which are tied to poor city layout.

Compare this to European or denser US cities where grocery stores are on each corner, and since people drive much less, they often buy food in smaller quantities only for the next day or two. Less food gets wasted this way.

City planning and zoning can play a huge role in reducing food waste. By using less strict zoning, spreading out grocery stores, and making short trips possible, cities can massively reduce food waste.

What if they used the foodcam idea at Walmart or another grocery store in an app form. So when food is about to go bad they send out a notification that the lower-priced food (kinda like a clearance sale) is available.

People don't like whitespace in their fridge? I'm the exact opposite. Overfilled fridges with old food drives me crazy

One of the things I found to have a gigantic impact is making shopping lists and sticking to them. Usually, my dad would do the groceries by memory, but we’d always end up with a good few products at the end of the week that were spoiled. After he got cancer and couldn’t go into public places, me and my mom took that over and we started making lists because we needed the crutch as to not forget anything. Now, we throw out a bit of rapidly aging fruit (think strawberries and the like)… and that’s about it. Maybe the odd bit of meat that went off before its date, but that is not something we have much influence over.

40% IS THROWN AWAY?!!!! THAT IS INSANE! Do you know how many homeless and starving kids we could help with that?

Even just at my school a lot of kids end up throwing away like half of their food because it tastes like crap

4:43 Exactly why I’m glad my Dad raised us to eat out of bowls. I know it sounds ridiculous to eat virtually everything out of there but it automatically portions everything you eat to a certain amount.
