Standard form for linear equations

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Sal, thank you for saving my mathematic mind. I never could have done it without this website. I'm now a math person, I enjoy doing math, and I have placed into a higher class in college thanks to 6 or 7 months of studying with this site. Seriously - this website just may have changed my life. #backtoschool

I sincerely thank you for the service you provide. I am studying for my teaching license and the math portion of the test seemed like a nightmare until I found your instructional videos . This has truly been a lifesaver for me and I feel much more confident in taking my exam. Thank you and thank you!!

I learned a way to identify both intercepts by inspection. Consider your line: 9x + 16y = 72. Divide both sides by 72, then (9/72)x + (16/72)y = 1. Rewriting (1/8)x + (2/9)y = 1. In this form the respective intercepts are the reciprocals of the coefficients of each term; i.e. x-int = 8, and y-int = 9/2. ◼

My textbook says standard form is Ax + By + C = 0

Thank you so much I am in 8th grade taking Algebra 1 and it is difficult this video helped me pass my math test

When he speaks about getting the slope what I do is I know that A is the numerator on the slope, and B is the denominator. Then u have to know if the slope is positive or negative. If the equation is written with a plus sign in the middle, the slope is negative, I.e Ax + By. If the equation is written with a negative sign in the middle, I.e, Ax - By, you know it is positive. My maths teacher defaults to Ax - By = A(x coordinate) - B(y coordinate), I think I got that last part right ❤

There is a mistake in the video at minute 2:07, Sal says the coefficients A, B and C must be integers but this is not necessary. You could take for example A=pi
