As India’s economy continues to grow, can the world’s most populous country truly replicate China's success of the past decades? Should India even imitate China? Maybe not, says our guest on this episode, Alicia García Herrero, Hong Kong-based Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific at French investment bank Natixis, and Senior Fellow at European think tank Breugel.

Whether India will be the next China is debatable or unforeseeable, but one thing is certain.. US will be the next India in the near future..

India’s culture and customs are not the same as China. Therefore, India can only be the next India at best.

Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.

India should find its own way of development. There is no point in comparing with China.

This senseless comparison by the media & pitting China & India continuously is causing divisions, distrust & other problems.
Both countries have their strengths & weaknesses; both can via trade & cultural exchanges benefit each other & the planet earth. Where there is a will there is a way.

For thousands of years in China, there was a saying . If you want to be rich, first you must build the roads. Infrastructure in China is decades ahead of India.

When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in China, the local government/bureau (depends on the size of that company) will mostly come to aid and help that company in every possible way so it can operate softly, with all kinds of infrastrutures.
When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in India, every local bureau senses corrupted money, they will let you grow a bit for a period of time and then harvest and squeeze you in every possible way, with shortage of electric power and water supply.
And that's only a fraction of the differences.

India is not the next China for few basic facts : Diversity in Culture, Religion, Ethnicity, Language, Regional power house and above all Democracy. China doesn't all these obstacles to built up the nation economically and financially in just a short period of 60 years. China swallowed with great pain and sacrifices to provide the world with cheap goods but learned hard and fast to develop its own industry base. Today it has established a complete industrial supply chain no other country can rival or imitate to produce goods efficiently and effectively. Therefore besides all India internal nightmare, it will be more than impossible to establish a equal efficient supply chain to outdo China. Take for example, the iPhone assembly line in India, all its parts and components have to imported from China. Oops have you ever heard of India being the graveyard for multi nationals?

As a Chinese, I am well aware of how hard and long the road of development is. At present, we have been on a parge with Western countries, but this is not enough. We have to surpass them, step on their backs, and repay them for what they have done to us in the past. We will not wait for you Indians, but we sincerely hope that you will catch up one day and leave Indian footprints on the backs of those Western countries. Then, we spent a long time writing unique stories between China and India.

China's success is the result of capable and competent government and hard working people. Chinese government has successfully combined capitalist and communist systems and made a system that fits China's own tradition, culture and development stage. China's step by step, region by region approach worked very well. China's flexibility and versatile economic policies are also the key factor for China's success. Chinese government is a very much people oriented government who puts the needs of its people at first priority. Every step of the economic development in China, benefits to its people always put on as first priority. That is the reason, all Chinese people have been benefited tremendously from China's development and modernization took place in the last 40 years or so. China has lifted extreme poverty in the country. This is a great contribution not only for China but for the world. China does not need assistance from UN on food products but India does. China took away the burden from UN. Unlike the West who got rich and powerful by invading, looting, genocide and destroying other countries, rising China did not do any of that.

China doesn't need routine elections. This allows their govt to set truly long term goals and objectives. India is a political melting pot. Modi barley scraped home recently. India can never unite long enough to overcome a multitude of intenal conflicts and set long term goals and objectives. India still has a colonised mindset. They are always looking for someone to bow down to. They need to educate, house and employ their 550 MILLION Dalits. Until that happens, they have no chance of becoming a truly united superpower ike China.

As an Indian, what i see from happening in India is that, no we are the Next China. Our politicians still play the religion card wildly. I would even say, that India today maybe more divided than British rule. From the kind of polarisation and extremist that is constantly fed into their minds is insane. The justification for it is even bizarre, religion. Indians don't have their priorities right. Education, science, infrastructure, development, healthcare isn't on cards for them, but temples, mosques, Churches are. There is no desire to go with the change, everything has to exactly as the Indian culture was like in history of the history. We don't want to even debate the core issues. The gender discrimination, religious extremism, civil rights and social security is just a disaster. I could go on and on. But the thing is these problems are not quick fixes. So i don't believe until the challenges i shed light on and even i ones i forgot to mention, if are not taken care of, it's hard to tell how we might fail as a country

I am a Chinese born in 1991. When I was in elementary school (probably from 1997 to 2003), most of the people around me and I were very poor. I didn’t even have money to pay for my school fees, clothes, shoes, and school bags. It's also in tatters. As for my child, she now has a life that I could not imagine before. I have experienced the most rapid era of discovery in China. However, we are only a developing country and there are still many problems. We need to continue to work hard, study hard, work hard, and improve our lives. I believe we will all get better and better.

India 's system of governance is facism, never democracy. You simply don't send "buttonmen" to target non voters and polical opponents.
1) did a 8 x Bollywood MI6 in Qatar?
2) did a "Hardeep Singh Nijjar" in Canada?
3) did a "Nikhil Gupta" in USA?
4) did a "Constable Chetan Singh" to the non voters in India?
Constable Chetan Singh: If you want to live and vote in |ndia, I am telling you it's only Modi or ELSE
how many more "buttonmen" has he got to "fix" his political opponents and non voters?
These facts should tell you whether the Indian voting process is fair.

Progress is not just population and GDP numbers. It's how the real population, the common folks, benefit from such growth. India is still inundated by the poor all over the country. Only the rich and some middle class benefit from india's growth. You find beggars all over the place in india, creaking trains, buses and public transport, inefficient health systems, yawning gaps between social classes and many other ills.

Oh purleez...Why compare India with China? India is not in the same league as China in. Best comparision for India is likely with Indonesia or Nigeria.

China took a ride on the massive globalization bandwagon, India missed it. Now, India is trying to do what China did in a deglobalization environment. Dear India, do not even try. Instead, figure out some way better fits you

Bangladesh surpassed India several years ago in per capita gdp. However, the gap is not that big yet. India should look up to Bangladesh and try to outperform them first. You have to walk a thousand miles step by step.

India certainly has great potentials. The question should be if India can be the next US, as the real largest democracy.

The main reason has fallen so far behind China in almost every sphere of development is due to the simple fact that the Chinese are smarter, more pragmatic and has greater business acumen than the Indians

I think the ultimate reason why India will not be a competing power in the future is its foundation is very lose. The west colonized India before so they know how easily it can be divided again. India have so many different ethnic, religious, Caste and racial differences its impossible to form a real unified country. It can be easily dismantled. Ofcourse now its useful, but later on when it makes and meaningful advancements it will be dismantled for sure. The best strategy for India is to not take sides.
