Thanks to Raid for feeding my village!

Sam always talks like his parents are sleeping in the next room. Which honestly makes me feel like I'm at a sleepover with my bestie just chilling and drawing. 😂

The cylinder method is actually really useful for perspective if keeping in mind the shape of a head. They teach you this in art school

We've got 13 parts of tiktok art tips, but will we ever get to see sam rate pinterest art tips?? I need to know if they're trustworthy!

I was noticing that as I practiced drawing faces (especially if not using a reference) they all ended up looking neutral in mood and each pretty similar to every other. So, I've started going through the TikTok Art tips video series, pausing at a random moment, and using Sam's face as a reference. I get delight, horror, frustration, revulsion, contemplation, surprise... a whole range of expressions!

"whats your career?"
"im a professional drawer"
"oh cool im a professional cupboard"

14:30 I do agree on this one though! Maybe not drawing a full cylinder, but if you've got basic knowledge of head/face drawing, loosely starting with a half-cylinder can actually be really good. It gives the brain a much quicker idea of the perspective you're going for when it comes to drawing portraits/faces.

And like I said, as a beginner I can imagine using cylinders might not be better and the result might turn out weird if they stick too close to the cylinder shape itself. But with knowledge already, it's a good little trick/addition to quickly lay down a face in perspective. Just from my own experience though, might not be for everyone ofc.

I used to name all of my layers and I've reduced the time it takes me to finish a piece significantly when I stopped. It also made me take things less seriously and allow me to retain a "flow" state while drawing a lot better so... if you're a person who tends to be very orderly (or you have OCD) - do NOT name your layers.
This may be a good tip for people who tend to be too messy, though. It really depends on the person.

4:50 I believe there is also a factor of how you normally draw and are comfortable drawing when it comes to this. Some artists (like myself) find it easier to use multiple layers, and that can keep things neat in its own way.
For me, I like having more layers since it makes it easier for me if I end up seeing a mistake or want to change the colors later, and I only need to change one or two layers instead of drawing it over again

There's a technique with water color paining that u put the paper (thats ment for this) in water and let it soak for about 2 mins and then when u paint the paper stays flat and gets less ruind by the paint and its easier to blend the colors... So it probably works with a canvas and acrilics too

the cylinder thing is actually useful for artists that keep trying to use the box head method, wish you explained why you don't like things fully and what to do instead instead of just bashing them and moving on

The thing about naming layers.
Sometimes when I do digital art I'll give my layers people names like Richard or Steve because I find it funny 😭

Sam I love seeing you talk about these tips! Giving proper information is important to those who are learning. Also I am someone who names their layers, though I just give up halfway through on giving them proper names. They usually are named as ‘I don’t like color theory’ or something of that

I'm one of the artist who got their tips reviewed, and ngl it kinda hurts to see it dunked on when I learn that tip from an industry professional art tutor 😔 Maybe next time message artists if they want their stuff to be reviewed on such a big youtube channel? Not everyone appreciates the sudden shock of seeing their stuff exposed in front of a big audience without a prior warning 😔

Pinterest and tumblr are amazing for aesthetics and refrences.
Also I've never heard of people using boxes for drawing anything except fingers. I've always been told to use spheres or oval spheres. My mom love art stuff so she's always had input and tips for me.

Sam admitting that he doesn't name his layers:
Me, just starting digital art: wait, you can name layers??

7:28 I do! I actually meticulously name every single layer with very few exceptions (like when it's just a temporary layer I'm planning on merging with the one below very soon) :)
