The L98 TPI Corvette was pretty state of the art technology back in the mid to late 80s. That 245hp back then was like having 400-500hp today.

Even if they had used the Mazda3 Turbo against the Corvette, you still have to consider that a clean C4 can still be found for $10K while a Mazda3 Turbo will cost three times that and still look like a blobcar. Cars today are obviously much more efficient, but that won't matter to anyone who doesn't want to drive an anonymous wind-tunnel amoeba.

The Corvette is so much cooler than the boring grey egg.

Also, let’s see if that Mazda is still kicking in 35 years! Rofl

80's vettes were extremely choked down by EPA. 90'S ZR-1 changed that. Love a 96' Grand Sport.

God I love this kind of content, my daily driver is a 1987 Z52 corvette and I couldn’t be any happier. Such a fun car to cruise in and a pretty quick car even 36 years later.

Classics are classics for a reason. I'd rather cruise around in that Vette and be seen in it than worry about what it can keep up with 40 years later.

There's a list of todays cars trucks and SUVs that would be quicker than this old beauty Corvette. Ppl are SO spoiled now and don't even know it.

obviously someone doesn't understand how long a second is in racing.

My 2005 stock silverado will do a 16.5 quarter mile. That's pretty insane when you think about it that even a dated truck is the same speed as a corvette from the 80s. That being said, obviously the cornering and driving experience of the vette is much, MUCH better

Nice thing about those Corvettes....you could go old school and put a lt1 or any engine from the Muscle car days...or go the route and put any Fire breathing 600hp engines from the new generation Muscle cars...on the Cheap.

My buddy drives his 1989 C4 from WV to Florida and back, or anywhere for that matter without concern for reliability. The Corvettes were so well built. Truly much more attention to fit and function than just about any 80s car, even the faster Buick Grand Nationals. The Buicks just weren't reliable over decades. Corvette is the only car built to last from that era.

only a few car lengths behind ....um that's an eternity in a race just sayin ...and i wouldnt care if it lost its 30plus years old and still looks cooler

Its not how fast you get there,
but enjoyment of the journey .

From roughly '72 until the zr1 of the early 90s the Corvette suffered from post oil embargo drops in performance. Now try against the Sledgehammer Corvette from '87ish. Do rolling 30 to 100mph.

They had a lot of technology what made it to cars since then. 1980s were a huge transitional phase for cars. We went from old school Big Blocks with carbs, to smaller displacement engines with turbos and EFI. I wouldn't call the base Vette firebreathing. Fastest 80s car was the Buick GNX. Wonder what that would do against today's cheap cars?

The c4 can do soooo much better than that. Maybe it’s just the 4+3 trans.. my 1990 auto STOCK is quick af and could hit 0-60 in 5.7. It’s definitely not stock now, but still.. the ability of these cars are insane!

The mazda probably costs more than the vette new lol.

Volkswagen GTI 16.4 @ 83mph, Toyota FX16 16.5 @ 82mph, and Acura Integra 16.5 @ 82mph quarter mile times in March 1987 Car and Driver. So I guess new cars haven't came too far considering your new Mazda is a half second slower... Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo 16.2 @ 84mph quickest in comparison. Maybe you should read some old car magazines and get a little perspective

The 80s and 90s were awesome. You had to earn your horsepower. I got a job a a machine shop in high school. The old timers that worked there helped me put together a 383 stroker for my 66 Chevy 2. No production car on the planet could beat me in the quarter mile. Not a Lambo, not a Ferrari, I could leave on anything. Now you just walk into a dealership and buy a ten second car. Damn, I miss those days. I drive like a grandma now.
