Many people seem to have a problem with ALL Contemporary Christian Music. Should we really paint the whole genre with the same brush?

If you feel led to support this ministry , you can do so here:

I love modern Christian music… However, there is a trend that seems to be getting worse. Lots of the lyrics seem to be focused more on us than they are on glorifying Christ. That is self worship. It’s becoming a big problem within the church!

That was a very beautiful song! I feel that Jesus has led me to this video, because I also have experience making both secular and Christian music, but I've always done both at the same time, when deep down I know that God wants me to leave my worldly ways and fully surrender to Him. This was a wake-up call for me!

I also think about Psalm 33 a lot when it says -- Praise the Lord with the harp: Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.

I really enjoy your videos, Sean, and listen to them often. Regarding the song, the music and your voice were also very professional, but without the video, you would never know that the lyrics had anything to do with glorifying God or was considered a Christian song. This really is the problem with many of today's "Christian" songs. Listen to it again without the video and you would think you were talking about a girlfriend.

You've got a perfect 90's rock voice, man. And yes, Christians are free indeed to do as we choose as long as it glorifies God. Not everything is beneficial, but everything is permissible.

I wrote music and was on the radio. Some of my music is still on Spotify. I was a nightclub DJ too. I recently reconnected with my old singer and I felt the passion of music again. I got out my keyboard and started making beats and composing tracks and writing songs.

But I just couldn’t stay there, in that mindset. Holy Spirit can’t dwell with sin. I’m thankful I never “made it”. I’m so full of myself I always want praise. I’m even tempted right now to brag on the…… past.

Wow I really enjoyed that Shawn! That bass line was flat laying it down. Nice groove.

I think a distinction needs to be made between Christian music and worship music I think that's a very serious distinction.

Imagery and music together can and does evoke emotion and in that state we can be vulnerable to accepting and following whatever message is being spoken. In some instances, that message can draw a person away from God and in others - as in the case of this example - can be used by God to draw a person near to Him. Seeing those scenes from the Passion in the context of 'it shall never be the same' brought tears of deep gratitude to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Great song and video! Thank you for sharing. As for music I listen too, I have always felt connected with Matthew West.

For me personally, I test the lyrics against scripture and let that be my guide. No matter what genre

Someone said it out loud. I’m a musician and I’ve been singing and playing in some form for most of my life. It’s gotten to the point where I almost immediately discredit people who are against CCM because there’s very little knowledge and discernment involved in these criticisms. The common argument of style on its own requires background knowledge of scales and chords and harmonics that the vast majority of people who make these arguments either don’t know about or won’t listen to. It’s refreshing to hear from a fellow musician who is able to acknowledge bad doctrine while at the same time recognizing songs and artists that do minister truthfully.

Wow Shawn! I had no idea! Thx for sharing. Before I was saved, I was in church writing and performing music in worship and sadly because I've seen how it easy out is to have a "religious experience" through the power and manipulation of worship when you're not even born again, but rather living a sinful life the other days of the week, I don't trust most modern expressions of "worship" that rely on manipulative music and atmosphere to whip people up.

There is a big difference between Christian music ministry and the Christian music industry. Many in the industry are compromised by their contracts, words and actions. Much of CCM is theologically weak and in error. There are some God-honoring artists, but they are few in number. I call CCM “you-who? Music”. You have no idea if they are singing about God or their partner. It is very important to scrutinize they folks who sing to your mind and soul. They stir emotions and we are not to be led by emotions, but rather the Word of God.

Very rarely does a song pull at my heartstrings. I was nearly tearing up listening to and watching this video. The gifts our heavenly father gave to you are being used to glorify the father and that is what matters. May the Lord God richly bless you, your family, and your friends.

Agree with you sean am concerned with the contemporary music because children of God should not be mixing up their music with worldly music if you are singing to the glory of God your music must have spiritual meaning. Your worship must be meaningful l dont believe that a worship leader should have a contract with the world and sing contemporary music. You can’t mix righteousness with unrighteousness because of money it’s either you sing to the glory of God or you sing to the things of the world.

The problem that is generally seen in CCM is not necessarily just the lyrics or even the music itself, but the sort of lives that the artists lead. Take a look at the people from bands like Maverick City Worship, Switchfoot, or perhaps even the Jesus People who helped to start all this. Ask yourselves after seeing how they’ve lived or are living now if there is any fruit of holiness in there. Are they obeying God and living in righteousness, or are they compromising and end up getting spotted by the world? I’ve heard of stories about solid Bible-believing churches regardless of denomination caving in to compromise because they’ve changed the standard of music. When that went the dress standards changed, then the teaching changed, until finally they end up becoming worldly to the point of apostasy. This may not happen to every church going that direction at the same frequency, sometimes it’ll take months or years for that gradual change to occur. It’s also worth noting that the root of the Rock Music which CCM is trying to emulate is far from godly. The fruit produced by practitioners of carnal, fleshly music would likewise be carnal and fleshly. As Paul Washer once put it, “Carnal means attract carnal people.” Yes we can’t deny the level of giftedness behind people who want to use their music for God’s glory, but as with the case of David bringing the Ark back to Jerusalem true worship must be done the right way. I do hope that you can understand my concerns with why CCM is being received so negatively. God bless you.
