I wouldn't say it's a unique spin. In several iterations of Megatron, he declared war against the Autobots and the Council of Primes because he believed that certain Cybertronians, mainly those low in the chain of command, were being unfairly treated by the higher ups. And when they denied his request for a newer, more fair, society, Megatron ultimately declared war to end their rule.

Last time I checked Megatrons backstory before IDW recently rebooted their transformers line, Transformers weren’t divided based on what their alternate form was, they were ruled by the Autobot Council, which was led by Zeta Prime. The sect of politicians who believed Cybertronians should be divided based on their alt forms were the Functionists, and they were constantly at odds with the Autobot Council, who knew the damage they could do to Cybertron if the Functionists ever got into power and imposed their tyrannical rules.

Though given how corrupt the Autobot Council was as well, it was little wonder Megatron rebelled along with a massive chunk of Cybertron chafing under Autobot corruption.

well, it isn't the *original* story, it's the aligned continuity (Transformer Prime, Adventures on Cybertron, Exiles, etc), but this movie is gonna be similar, but have a good spin.
