That’s true, they can promise change, to be half normal for a day, then their straight back into their selfish pathetic behaviour. Not strictly bounded by themselves. Their tentacles monitor everything. If you want to go to an event as a couple, the narcissist will find a way to stop it. They won’t risk the possibility that someone could have a negative view of them or like you more. Weekend farmer’s markets were agonizing and I couldn’t figure out why vegetables were a problem. Of course, a vendor might smile more at me than him and that would have endless deep meanings.

That is quite true, but they do have their "caring" mask for public show. Someone who doesn't know them will think them caring, empathetic, even sympathetic, but once they have your attention they become braggarts, exaggerate their self importance, and appear larger than life. If they ever have intimate contact with you, that's when you will see their destructive side...
