1- Doesn't thin out skin
2- Doesn't exfoliate skin
3- can be used with exfoliating acids
4- can be used with vit c
5- low strength can also work, consistency over intensity, number related to type of retinoid is imp
6 - can be used around eyes

These are the convos my derm would have if she could, but doesn't have time for in our 15 min appointments! ❤

0:30: 🧪 Dr. ShireenIdris debunks common myths about retinols in skincare.
4:26: 🔑 Retinols and exfoliating acids are often confused, but they have different effects on the skin.
8:31: 💡 Combining vitamin C and retinol can be beneficial for the skin, but it's important to understand the ingredients and potential irritation.
12:23: 🔑 Using a lower concentration of retinol consistently over time is more beneficial for the skin than using a higher concentration infrequently.
16:22: 😊 When using tretinoin around the eyes, it is important to avoid applying it directly on the eyelids and instead apply it on the bony part of the lower eyelid, buffering it with Vaseline to reduce irritation.

This was super interesting! I always cringe when people say Retinoids are exfoliants...thank you for the explaining that so clearly. And like you...I have used Rx Tret around around my eyes (not too close) without problem but can NOT tolerate it anywhere near the corners of my mouth or my chin. Instant dermatitis! And nobody ever talks about that area so thank you! And yes please on a Retinoid Deep Dive...especially the difference in strengths.

#4--I've always heard not to mix Vitamin C and retinol. Thank you for clearing up the myth. I've been avoiding Vitamin C on the nights I use retinol and now feel better about introducing it to my routine.

Yes, please do a video on the percentages & types of retinoids, and how we can gradually increase the strength we are using. Is strength linear as you move across different types? (e.g. is the next step from retinyl ester a low retinol (0.25%) and the next step up from 1.0% retinol a retinaldehyde?) Also, I'm afraid to use products that don't state the concentration, as I have sensitive skin - is that a legitimate concern? How safe is it to assume that eye creams with retinol are a lower concentration? If my eye area gets irritated, that sets me back weeks or even months, but that area where eyelid meets cheek is THE place I need retinoids more than anywhere else.

I love her delivery - and my word, what a marvellous skin.
But glad you summed it up so concisely, because my cosmetic doctor and I are always fighting over me using tretinoin every day (I may not be an MD but I also work in medicine - as a biologist), and consistently using it (followed up by a nice thick layer of Cerave, and La Roche Posay Uvmune SPF 50+ every morning, religiously) has done *miracles* for my skin.

13:50 It would be great if you can deep dive about retinoids percentages because I started high and wrong with 0.05% retinoid acid and it was too much for my skin so I pause it and now I’m using the L’Oréal revitalift retinoal daily and my skin it’s tolerating it perfectly, I’m using an hydrating serum first then I let it dry and apply the retinol 👌🏼 so if you can deep dive in percentages that would be great ✨

That video about vitamin A derivatives and their concentrations would be so useful since I would like to start using them smartly. Thanks for the info Doc. You got a fan from Mexico!

Since listening to you I’ve realized I wasn’t moisturising enough. Since listening to you, I switched up things and fine lines once there are GONE!! Thank you thank you

Wish you could talk about copper peptides, and if it’s true you can’t combine with niacinamide, AHA’s, vitamina c and retinoids?
And if so, why?
And are they really worth using them?
Thanks for your videos ❤

Took accutane twice during my teen years and I just learned that it’s an oral form of tret🤯 I’ve been using adapalene for 2 years and my skin has been pretty good, read it somewhere that its potency is similar to the lowest % of tret, wonder if that’s true… please do a deep dive into the % and potency of tret vs retinal and adapalene🙏

It took me roughly a year to work up to a 0.1% tret! I took Dr Idriss's advice on this and started 'low and slow' and the results are amazing and well worth the time it took. I started on a 0.025% and only used it once a week for a few weeks then started increasing it to two times a week and so on until I knew my skin was ready to move up to 0.5%. At times I stopped it altogether if I noticed irritation then started slow again and changed how I applied it according to the seasons i.e. retinol sandwich. It's worth perservering

I'm 62 and have developed an interest in aging well. I am so enjoying you and your quest to educate and empower. I have started the retinoid journey with retinol and planning on retinal then possibly Tretinoin. I also am planning on using red light therapy panels in my endeavor to age well. I have been doing research on these. I read tonight to “avoid red light therapy if using Retin-A.”I know that is the same as Tretinoin. My questions for you is 1) Is it true that I need to choose between red light therapy and Tretinoin? 2) Does this only apply to Tretinoin or also to lower-strength retinoids? 3) Could I use a red light therapy mask instead of a stronger panel and still use retinoid products?
4) What do you think of red light therapy panels? I follow Alex Fergus and read the research he posts about RLT. Thanks for reading my lengthy comments and questions. ❤

I super appreciate that you mentioned not applying so close to the eye and the risk of dry eye. I had no idea! Thank you!!

I'm an Esthi and this is the first video if yours I've watched. Quick subscriber! I've heard so much about your videos. The spa I work at, I'm the newest Esthetician and the only one that's pro-retinol. But I'm slowly trying to help some of the others learn more about it instead of scaring people into avoiding it.

I am a 51 year old non practicing esthetician and I am BINGE WATCHING your videos right now! You are amazing and such a great personality. I freaking adore you!!! Been using retinol since I was 19 because of my horrible acne. I've had pretty good skin until I woke up one morning this year and everything has dropped, sagged, and is hyperpigmented. Not sure if it's melasma, hormonal, or the sun, our electronic devices. Would LOVE to see you do a video on hyperpigmentation and what you suggest to get rid of it.
