There is 2 ways to put the story of La Llorona.
The first way aka the original tale: there once was a beautiful girl named Maria. All of the men in town wanted her, but she was looking for someone who would love her for herself instead of her looks. Then, a Spanish man came to town, and him and Maria fell in love. The Spanish man's name was Hernán. They eventually had 2 kids together, and they got married. One day, Hernán came home from work. But when Maria went out there to see him, he wasnt on his horse. Instead, the horse was hooked to a carriage and another woman was on it. Of course, Maria was very angry. But when she tried to talk to him, hernán smacked her so hard her and the kids fell to the ground. Then hernán left. Maria held her kids close and walked over to a river and told them their father would never hurt them. Then she dropped them into the river. She realized what she had done and cried out for her children. But it was too late. Now she has a fate of looking got her children for eternity. And if you go by the river at night. She might mistake you for one of her children and take you home with her or drown you.

The second way is from a book called summer of the mariposas :

In the story, Odilia (the main character) and her sisters found a dead body in the river. I'm not going over that part too much tho. But they start driving to the border of Mexico cuz they live in Texas, and they stopped to make the dead man look more alive. Odilia was planning on turning in the dead body to the border police when they get there. She took a walk by the river and met la Llorona. In that story, la Lloronas lore is different than the legend. One night, she was in a fight with her husband about his decision to leave. The children of hers got scared and ran out of the house while their mother chased after them. The boys fell into the river and drowned. Now la Llorona dwells and looks for her children still. She sees her children running by the river but when she tries to save them they always die. She does not try to drowns kids. In fact, she protects the kids of the sun, the Aztec kids.
