On July 20, 1944 many of the most beautiful cities in Germany, including Dresden, Freiburg, Ulm, Breslau, Danzig, Wurzburg, Nuremburg, Potsdam, Etc. Etc. were still completely intact. These places were filled with priceless architecture from centuries of creativity. This bomb's unsuccessful result sealed the fate for a very long list of western civilization to be utterly destroyed over the next 9 and a half months. And this is not all. Many, many Jews, civilians and soldiers of many countries who were alive on July 20, 1944 were dead by May 1945. Had this event on July 20, 1944 been successful things would have been very, very different. No battle of the Bulge It is one of the biggest what ifs in history.

That is not the full truth: first of all this hasn't happened in the bunker but in a wooden house in the middle of Wilczy Szaniec. Second of all the briefcase was under Hitler's legs but someone bumped into the briefcases and put it somewhere else away from Hitler. And third of all Stauffenberg was captured at the gate to the airport in Hitler's Wolf's Lair. I was at Wolf's Lair and if someone is interested in World War II, he needs to visit it. That of course was not the first and not the last assassination try on Hitler.
