Should you buy a prime lens for your Sony A6000? Or is the kit lens good enough?

When comparing 2 things place them side by side!

some of these examples are a little flawed. You keep mentioning that the prime captures action better which is completely untrue. The reason the prime is sharper is because you are able to use a faster shutter speed since the lens lets more light through which you never mentioned. Just something that less experienced photographers may not not know. If you want to get the same sharp image with action with the kit lens you just need a higher iso which will introduce more noise but it's an option

Just grabbed the a6000, super thankful for these videos really helped me make my decision.

In the beginning of the video you showed the two different shots side by side. Thats very helpful instead of seeing one shot the next. Having both pictures on the screen at the same time gives us a better example of the pic

The Sony 16-50 kit lens in conjunction with all the other parameters of shutter speed, ISO, tripod, etc.,  is a good option as a single versatile lens.  I have taken awesome commercial quality pictures with it just by understanding the lens and it's limitations and using parameters to make up the difference.  One additional parameter is "Light Room" which has an excellent lens profile from Sony.

Additionally,  a prime lens will beat ANY non-prime lens in speed and clarity across the board, including lens that cost thousands of dollars.

Hi Arthur, How would your rate image quality of the sony 20 mm 2.8 vs the kit lens set at 20 mm? Thanks

Love what you did at the end, cranking up the aperture every at each intro of the 5 points. As for the E35, you just sold it to me 👍

Is this the best lens for videography using your setup? Well... considering price and function.

So, I came upon your channel about two weeks ago while looking for a camera to buy for an upcoming trip. Since I saw your review, i have bought a Sony A6000, Fosicam FM1-45 gimbal, and now a Prime lens. At this rate I won't have any money for the trip. Thanks for the advice and compros.

Very helpful video. I love the style of the A6000 and A6300 and the continuous auto focus is as good as any camera. But the lack of fast native zooms keeps me from making the jump. Some people say to just adapt an A mount or canon zoom. Well at that point you might as well have a full size DLSR. Plus there are mixed reviews on how well adapted lens work on this camera. I wish Sony would make some small fast native zooms for this camera.

I think the kit lens is good for people who obviously want light and cheap zoom lens. It's decent for outdoor shots with a lot of light, for people who don't really want a ton of bokeh. Stopping down to f8, the sharpness on the kit lens at 50mm goes up a lot. Still definitely behind the 56mm Sigma, but surprisingly decent. Also true for 35mm on the kit lens. f8 35mm is probably the strongest spot for the lens. Of course, we can't always do f8 because that's not a lot of light coming in, though it depends on what we're shooting.

Indoors I mostly shoot indoor static objects on a tripod, so that f8 doesn't bother me. But portraits, I also do indoors, and there lighting is not perfect, and opening up wider would help a lot. But as soon as I go from f8 to f5.6 on the kit at 50mm, the sharpness takes a big dump.

So I would say, kit is cheap zoom for pretty decent sharpness all things considered at small apertures. But a good prime will still absolutely beat the kit lens in any aspect. Most people don't fit all the characteristics of a photographer who would benefit most from the kit lens, but if they do, it's a good choice for a person on a very tight budget. a5100 with kit lens is like $310 on Ebay. Playing to the strengths of the kit lens with an apsc sensor for $310 could be a good deal.

But yeah, kit lens is not a great lens by any means. :P
