I agree but I also think that the seeming disadvantage of a prime lens is also one of the greatest things about it.
When you’re forced to only have one focal length you’re forced to come up with creative solutions to get the shot you want. Another benefit is that you’re actually forced to move which can result in shots that you wouldn’t have got otherwise.

Sure. But with a zoom you cant get that 1.2 or 1.4 aperture.

i just zoom with my feet. plus, if you shoot w/primes long enough, you develop an intuition. you see a scene you want to photograph, you just know what lens to use. and on the other hand, if you only have the lens that's on your camera, you just know what to look for, and not waste time w/scenes that won't work for the lens that you have.

Title: the “problem with prime lenses
Content: describes the most basic difference between prime and zoom lenses that isn’t really a problem at all

Zooms definitely made me more lazy as a photography. I always slow down and think more with primes

As someone who daily that 24 to 70 is a beautiful thing but after getting my $500 35mm I sold it immediately. I notice around 65% of my shots were are 35mm, I did not take my camera on most trips nor outside for how heavy it could be and was using a late 2000s apsc dslr with a 24mm and I was having fun. While convenient just too heavy and expensive for a daily.

In Chile:
Nifty fifty RF lens: US $300
24-70 2.8 RF lens: US $3, 500

This is so true.
Even shorter range zooms are a marvellous addiction.
Primes are great for a planned and stationary shoot but, for run and gun, it’s a different story.

70-200mm F2.8 and higher focal length are acceptable, but below 100mm focal length i would choose primes thats has F1.2 - F1.8 over zoom lens with F2.8

i have 18-35mm F1.8 + 50mm F1.4 + 70-200mm F2.8.

You can zoom with a prime, it's called using your legs

It does not matter which lens you use, you will always miss shots you could have taken with another lens. Sometimes a 24-70 is too short, too slow or not wide enough for the photo you want to take. And with a prime you need to move more and be more creative. With a zoom it is easy to be lazy and just zoom in on the "best" composition from where you stand, and thus missing out on a better composition that an experienced prime shooter who knows his focal length can find. I also find that I am more creative and less intimidating with a small lens than with a big zoom.

this is the reason the x100v made me a better photographer as it made me think of composition more as it was a fixed focal length camera

My 24-70mm sits in the bag at home, 35mm prime and carry 100mm macro with me. Lighter than that 24-70mm and more versatile

It’s not a problem. Poor title. It’s the actual “difference” between them. It’s like saying the problem with soda is that it’s not milk.

I think the portability of prime lenses is a huge plus, also smaller lenses feel less intrusive to people around you.

Actually if you want to do social documentary photography, using a prime lens can get your skills really high
Not only you'll be way better at composition, you also get to learn how to communicate with people better because of the fact that you can't zoom in and you're forced to get closer to people

Wait, you're telling me you can zoom with a zoom, and a fixed lens is fixed? Thank god you made this video.

That's why I always love to work with zoom lenses... though Primes has their own advantage !

It is important to understand that distance to nearest object vs background not focal length controls near/far size perspective. If for example you shoot a face from 3, 6, and 9 feet you will see a change in the relative sizes of nose and ears. Some distances will be more flattering than others. When that is the goal find the distance at which the facial proportions are most flattering THEN select the focal length which produces the ideal in camera crop.

On APS-C bodies 24-70mm will allow full figure to head and shoulders from 8-12 ft. a distance which flatters most faces the most. On full frame 24-105mm is the better choice or 24-200mm if wanting tight headshot crops in camera.

That said the the goal isn’t always to flatter a subject by using “seen-by-eye-normal” perspective shooting distance but understanding the cause and effect results in less trial and error when doing so.
