I was just now reading up on how prime lenses are sharper than zoom lenses because it has less glass to pass through. And now I see this short 😂 always right on time Anthony!

Own both 24-70 2.8 and 35 1.8. That prime is used much more often:
- lighter
- smaller (fits in large pocket and less intimidating for portraits)
- I'm less worried about damaging it
- more creative, less to think about, forces me to walk around and reveals more interesting compositions

Unless you have a specific assignment I would recommend going out with one body & one lens. Limitations are great for creativity.

One important thing missing is that primes often have shallower depth of field / larger maximum aperture. It's gotten to the point of madness where you can find f/0.7 for a reasonable price

I find that using a prime lens makes me so much more aware of composition and the point of view I'm taking to get the shot - it's also one less thing for me to think about as I have no zoom 😂

Just sad that canon dropped EF-M so quick that I'll likely never get a decent native 50mm for my Eos M6

To me i just combine primes and zooms at f4 to save money and weight.
If you need low light, you might as well get a prime well below 2.8 anyway.

A very important thing between the two is the aperture...but everyone knows that.

Yep, I prefer zoom for most situations but love prime lenses for my more creative shots and when I want to tell a story with just one picture. One of my favorite shots to get is foggy morning street shots when no one is really up and about. Those I shoot in both color and black and white as I prefer very little to no post processing after the fact. I have a whole list of lens I want to get as I learned alot since I started photography 25 years ago. It's a combination of the person, the camera body and the lens. More so the person and the lens. The photographer the more he shoots and screws up the more he learns the camera and the lens. Each new lens I get I spend a good few hours with each taking random shots to see what the lens is capable of and if it has it own little quirks and playing with the settings to find what works best in each situation. One of my best shots I got when I first got the 55-200mm Nikon DX lens was complimented by a professional from England. Was nothing fancy just a shot of the moon with some tree branches cradling it in the shot. That shot was taken with a D60 and he thought it was a higher end camera. Especially today the bodies are all phenomenal performers and it will come down to the glass and the person holding the camera.

I mean it all depends on what your shooting, If you want to photograph aircraft, your typically going to NEED a telephoto lens that can reach far away objects. On the other hand, if your shooting portraits or landscapes, you won’t necessarily have as big of a need for a telephoto lens but would rather be better off with a wide angle lens like an 18-55 or a 28-70. You can’t just buy a lens plainly because it’s cheaper, you have to determine what you will be shooting and the environment you will be in.

I currently have the RF 50mm 1.8, 24mm 1.8, Viltrox 85mm 1.8 and love them. But I think I will be getting the 24-70mm to add to my bag.

I think prime best suited at 24-85 range. Outside that eg 8-20 or 100-800 better suited for zoom ones
