My grandfather served in the German army during ww2. He single handedly destroyed 13 tanks. He was the worst tank mechanic Germany ever had.

As a German and former engineer officer (cold war times), I don't think, that the German measures will be enough to built the military backbone of Europe. Western Gemany, in cold war times, had an army of conscripts with 580.000 men plus 1 million in reserve and the equipment to get them armoured and weaponized to the front. There we had a population of 60 million.
After the fall of the Soviet Union and the reuunion with Eastern Germany (now 80 million people), the necessity for a big army vanished. The Russian threat in the minds began to fade. Germany began to collect the peace dividend, sold and transformed the barracs and fundeamentally neglected the old principle:"Be prepared!"
So I don't think, that Germany will be able to adopt the necessary actions within the next years. To form an army leading the territorial defence of Europe from the state we are actual in, would need an effort of 4 to 5 percent of GDP per year for approximately 10 years and afterwards something around 2, 5 % per year to hold the status. This act of force is actually out of the imagination of any political party we have here. So there is no danger of Germany getting an European Superpower. The development of new weaponery by German ingenious and so on, would surely make it possible, to develop real hot stuff for future powers, but there is no political will to be militarily one.

To all answering,

you are right. Each of you, with his view on the topic. Yes, it is a whole lot of money and yes, the money was urgently needed for the integration of Eastern Germany and one could surely spend it for a lot of other important things and so on.
The question, that has to be answered is: What is the price, we have to pay, to stay in peace and freedom. This price just went up.
The German army, after years of saving skills and the loss of a whole bunch of equipment and facilities, is not able to defend Germany or be even a heart piece of NATO defence efforts. Wether our allies will defend the left gaps, seems uncertain.
Let's do a little math.
Our Eastern border is about 1.200km long. The "Bundeswehr" has actually about 180k men and women. For each combat soldier, you need between 3 to 5 men behind him, to do the logistics, maintainance, healthcare and so on. Lets say, the German army is very efficient and needs only 3 "supporters", and the air-, marine- and cyberforces were not taken in account. This means, we have 45k combat (tanks, infantry, paratroopers a.s.o) and combat support troops (artillery, air defence, engineers, ABC a.s.o.). Lets say, all soldiers are lined up and each of them can protect 10 m of the defence line in average. So we have 450km of 1.200 km protected, no reserves left, and each officer and non commissioned officer direct in the line of fire. What's with the rest of 750km border line? Even doubling up would probably not be sufficient, if there are no potent partners helping.
Politically the "Bundeswehr" and its mission were neglected and underfinanced for about 20 years. If you want to get close to a real defence army by 2030, that is capable and equipped for its mostly unchanged mission, a whole lot of money and other efforts will be necessary.
Is it worth it? In my opinion: Yes! I don't want to live under the thumb of Putin or any other authoritarian leader.
Can we afford it? Yes! We could afford a more than double sized army, 40 years ago, with a 25% smaller population and we didn't live bad in these times.
Are the German people ready for this? Partly.
And our politicians in power? Not at all. To be a serious military player on the European stage, is not their aim. This is quite unpopular (because it will be expensive and this money can't be spent for other, more popular (and often unnecessary) topics).
There is a German saying. Translated it would probably go like: " Who doesn't want something, finds excuses, who wants something, a path!"

It's funny how they complain about Germany's military strength when they forced Germany to demilitarize in the first place.

After WW II, Germany was - quite understandably - demilitarized first, and ashamed of its recent agression and atrocities. Then, the Soviet Untion started colonizing a large part of non-Russian Europe, so Western Germany needed to build up the military again. But once the threat sitting in the East collapsed, German dreams of pacifism became largely realistic. Back then, I was in the German army, and people were legally allowed to call us "potential murderers". These very same people are now in political power and scream for military to be built up again. No wonder most people don't want to join an army these days, so Germany has huge recruiting issues.

4:30 We don't have many in reserve because of the Two Plus Four Agreement. In the “Two Plus Four Agreement, Germany committed itself to limiting its armed forces to 370, 000 men. Maybe we should change it, it's outdated.

The hiring of outside consultants was never going to be fine. As we in the UK have witnessed too often, they usually recommend actions which, surprise, surprise, result in poor performance, increased costs and questionable deals. Military recruitment, military housing maintenance and Covid PPE are just three examples.

Germany has always been a military might. German engineering alone is ranked at the top. The best rifles ever made are of German origin. The best aircraft ever made are of German origin. The German soldier is amongst the most professional and capable. I'm glad they are on our side.

the weak and often times underfunded or wasted potential of our military saddens and makes me struggle extremely to stay motivated as a soldier of the bundeswehr.

I find quoting Global Firepower's figures problematic because opaque calculations are made on incorrect calculation bases.
The defense budgets are partly incorrect, outdated or have been incorrectly converted. For example, in 2024 Australia's defense budget will be 55.7 billion Australian dollars = 36.4 billion US dollars. Global Firepower gives a value of 52.6 billion US dollars. Serious error. Probably equating US dollars with Australian dollars. For example, in 2024 Germany's defense budget will be 71.75 billion euros = 77.46 billion US dollars. Global Firepower gives a value of 55.9 billion US dollars. Serious error. Annual share of the special fund of 19.8 billion euros (21.4 billion USD) not taken into account. For example, in 2024/2025 the United Kingdom's defense budget will be 57.1 billion pounds sterling = 73.2 billion US dollars. Global Firepower gives a value of 62.8 billion US dollars. Serious error.
etc. etc.
You shouldn't blindly quote any media, especially since it's not even clear who the publisher is.

0:10 You did not say an important word that shouldn't have left out - 'forced' - It was a forced neglect of military by the USA, UK, France and ex USSR. Even after the reunion those countries imposed rules on Germany what Germany was allowed to have. The last rules were only cancelled around 2010 and 10 years are not enough to build military, especially not with the refugee crisis around 2015 that was mostly paid by Germany. A rule for example was except for a few samples all NVA (east German) equipment had to be binned because those countries required it. That were thousands of tanks, armored vehicles, weapons, airplanes, helicopters etc. Material that could now be used to help Ukraine. And this only one

The military reserve of Germany is currently 900.000 men. This 900.000 men have served a two year military service as Germany has a compulsory military service. The reserve is divided into two groups, an active and a passive one. The active group is regularly in training and the other has to be made fit again before a war, which is one of the tasks of the active reserve. However, due to the previous two years of training, this can happen quite quickly. The compulsory military service is currently paused, but can be quickly reenabled by the parliament, wich is even being discussed at the moment.
Aircraft carrier are a useless joke if the enemy has a serious military. They can only impress a few third world countries, because an aircraft carrier can be sunk very quickly and then dozens of aircraft will disappear in one fell swoop.

The incompetence level of German leadership begs to differ, they would need to completely restructure the procurement system and that will take many years even if they had the political will to do so.
