My fellow cowboys and I were last there in 1977. It's used as a mess hall for the spring roundup of cattle.

It's simply a mess hall for cowboys. Cattle, roundups, cowboys eat.

It's an old cattle camp used to feed the cowboys coming in with the cattle.

I remember going to a place like this in SoCal in the 1970s. It was most likely a Boy Scout camp. You would have your tents around the area and then have meals in the chow hall. Served by the older kids and fathers and den mothers

Either a scout camp or a cattle ranch with centralized chow hall. "Roundup time" would invite all the cowhands to this location.

When I was a Boy Scout in the 1970's, we used to go somewhere near Post, Texas. There we would a building like this nearby where we set up our tents and campsite. In the mornings we would line up near a basin to wash up, brush our teeth, and get ready for breakfast. We would line up, walk in, and Scout Masters and the Eagle Scouts would be making breakfast and sandwiches for later. If you wanted to earn an extra badge, you would volunteer for kitchen duty. Those of us who were first in line would eat inside. The outer benches and picnic tables were for the overflow of kids. The burning pits were set ablaze in the evenings and we sit around listening to stories told by the Scout Masters. Then we would go Snipe hunting with a paper bag and a flashlight. This brings back lots of wonderful memories of being a kid. Thank you.

Glad to see these comments setting this guy straight. I saw immediately that this was never a "homestead." Nothing at all unusual about it. A chow hall and camping spaces is all it is or was.

I worked as a dishwasher in a place like this back in the 1950s. It is much smaller than the one I worked in as we had over 300 people eating in our place. The kitchen looks very complete and I would guess they were feeding around 75 people there. I was paid $50 for the summer and received room and board. It was a busy summer with a lake nearby so we could swim in the afternoon while the campers went to other activities. This place was probably similar in that it was used in the summer. Actually the construction is quite strong to have lasted so well.

We would rent places like this in the 1970-80 to bring our tents and campers for large family reunions. It was great all the ladies in the large kitchen sharing recipes and laughter. In Idaho and Washington..

a two-holer ! I grew up using a two-holer . Ours had a small window in it . I can tell you that winters in 1960's Ohio got mighty cold at times. Young folks today have no idea how blessed life is today . I can honestly say that I miss those days, sometimes . Thank you God

My friend, I hear you, but it is not odd at all to those who grew up in small towns and ranches all over the U.S. We understand perfectly why the built there and what it was used for. People who raise sheep and cattle generally did not live very near towns, for a good reason. And of course they had water, or those buildings would not be there. Not just from a tap. I totally understand that a city dude would have these questions. Not that there is anything wrong with being a city dude. It is a very interesting place to me, personally. Thank you.

It's a Cow Camp used at roundup time!

It's not a homestead. It's a camp and that building is the kitchen and dinning area for all the kids who's at camp or the cowboys rounding up and or moving cattle from one area to the next and this was their camp.

This is an old cook house for a camp. Probably for a Boy Scout, Girl Scout, church group, YCC work camp, BLM work camp

This was not a business or a restaurant. It's a chow hall for a church camp, Boy Scout Camp, Cowboy Camp, or even a military recreation camp -- not all that mysterious. And not bizarre at all. It could be 25 years since it was last used. That's the sad part. Someone needs to restore their annual camp out here!

My grandmother used to have that exact same refrigerator. Mid 60’s. I would go plundering and the handle always shocked me.
