Thanks for the info Jason. Yeah, the VIC Card talked about in this video was actually a huge breakthrough for Reserve and National Guard veterans. Basically, Congress passed a law stating that all Reserve and National Guard veterans, who have completed their full term of service with an Honorable Discharge, can now represent themselves as veterans to any business offering veteran discounts and to their communities if asked if they are a veteran. As part of this law, the VA was ordered to create the VIC Veteran's Card.

Now, most states and the VA still do not consider a training-duty only Reserve or National Guard VIC Card recipient as an actual veteran for the purpose of benefits, because they still require federal, non-training active duty service, or be permanently disabled (service-connected), to get those benefits.

However, the VIC Card law did make it legal for all qualifying Reserve and National Guard veterans to tell people they are a "Veteran" of the military service for the purpose of getting veteran discounts and for a general recognition of their service from the community. This is a really big deal considering that before the law, Reserve and National Guard veterans who were never activated or service-connected, were considered to be "civilians" and could not legally tell people they were veterans.

In fact, before this law, they could even be charged with stolen valor in some states for representing themselves as veterans to get discounts. The VIC Card law changed all of that.

Would be nice if this rolled out and government agencies were aware of this. supposed to take the place of dd214 in terms of proving honorable service. walked into dmv, showed the id and was told nobody accepted it. employees said it doesn't say honorable on it. i said, what military id says "honorable"? i said u cant get the id unless you served honorably. frustrating none of the vets i talked to know anything about it. it was rolled out, but no press about it really.

Uncharacterized isn't relevant if the Veteran was Service Connected by the VA. I had a freak accident in BCT and was rendered Uncharacterized due to a really short Active Duty Service time, via a blown kneecap. The Army was nice enough to rate me low prior to Discharge, I was on Profile the whole time due to my knee, and I access bases with my VA ID all the time. The VA has me as Honorable, but my DD-214 says Uncharacterized. Once I had my VA Award Letter the VA never raised a fuss, I was mailed my VA ID in a week after the VA took my photo. Never missed a beat ever since

I served for 6 years in the Navy. Four of those were honorable, re-enlisted for another 4 but half-way through I made mistakes and was served an OTH. Would i still be eligible for this card and other benefits?

I was in the VA system more then a year before I could get an ID card. I had to drive 3 hours, one way, to go to a location that would issue them.

However, my state, when presented with your DD214, will add Veteran to your drivers license and that is accepted at all the stores.

It is unfortunate for me that I can only have VIC, which is pretty nice though. Yet I am still regret for made a decision on leaving the military after an year.

TYSM. Just requested my I.D. after this video. Since I was already in the VA.gov login system, all they needed was my Driver's License and a current pic. The rest was in there.
