I put 90 a week in my wallet, which covers gas, groceries and spending. I use sinking funds for gifts, car repairs etc and I don't mix that money. I use my cash back credit card for mystery shopping (and keep it paid in full).

I tried this many, many years ago. It didn't work for me then cuz I knew there was $$$ in the house and I would use it for whatever it was that I wanted. Keeping it out of sight has worked well for me and it isn't readily available, so I've saved up 12 months of expenses, if needed.
My grandmother used this starting in the 30's and she swore by it.

I pay cash for groceries, gas, entertainment, my mortgage, dental and vet bills. Anything leftover I pay extra on my mortgage. Credit card I pay my cell phone with and if I have shortfall on vet or dental bill. But I work hard not to have a shortfall. Interest rates have gone up with this recession.

I use cash envelopes. I keep all my receipts and at the end of the month I total them up. Than at the end of the year I have a grand total.

I know that cash envelope system works for many, many people! I find that if I use my credit card and write it in my check register every single time and what I use it for that's the way I tracked my money. Seems to work for me, in fact when I looked at it I thought wow I go to the donut shop a lot LOL, that is my meeting place for my friends and just to relax and get my office work done. I've never used the cash envelope system but I'm going to suggest my mother and brothers use it. We'll see how receptive they are. We put everything we can on a credit card that earns cash back or points toward gift cards. It works very well for us. We can check the balance online so there's no surprise if we missed a purchase. I had not used cash only for food in a long time, until you mentioned it earlier. It has been very useful to me as I have been able to prevent grocery cost creep during this inflationary period - it requires me to "keep to the list!" It is working beautifully. With the cash system, if you have a bad memory, and I did even when younger, I would "think" I hadn't spent the money in that category when I had. Credit cards have earned me tons of incentives over the years. I have a high point that I do not plan to go over, since I pay off the bill monthly. If I go too high, due to unexpecteds, I will live like a miser the following month. Cash, people will steal. Cash requires you not to lose and remember. Cash is only visual to your brain if you are constantly touching it and taking it out to count it. Not a wise thing to do once you leave home.

Cash envelopes saved my butt in another state- got a fraud on my debit first day there and it took a month to get my new debit card.
But because I had traveled with grocery, gas, propane/ laundry and misc. money, a month was no problem.
I don’t use the cash system but the envelope system on my smart phone/when I get home for the summer because I only shop about once a month maybe twice so it’s just as easy for me to sit in the car and subtract the amount from what I allowed myself in the phond envelopes so I can keep up with what I have to spend left for the rest of the month. so if you’re into virtual envelopes they work just as well - I just got to stick to it lol.
Once I go back to the desert I go back on the cash in hand and that works great!

I spend cash. It's easier to balance one large withdraw than a million piddly charges. But when I save, I put it in my savings account. I earn a very, very small bit of interest.
