Altra Lone Peak 5 – Box Opening and 1st Impression – Lone Peak 5.0 Review

Behold the Altra Lone Peak 5.0! I’ve been using Altra Lone Peak trail runners for all my Appalachian Trail hikes. After having blister and knee issues with other types of shoes a few years back, I tried the “zero drop” Altra Lone Peak 3.0 and loved them. They fit me perfectly and feel great. I kept buying them until they were no longer available. Altra has evolved the series over time, releasing the 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 versions of the shoe. More often than not, people complained about the fit of the new versions and universally, the rubber toe was notorious for peeling off. The new lone Peak 5 version of the shoe features a stitched toe! Will this end the peeling issue? We’ll see as I continue to provide updates of my experience. Out of the box, they fit true to size, just like my old 3.0 did. Note these are now available in “wide” and “medium/standard” width. I purchased the medium width. The color is Dark Slate/Red.

The stitched toe is a great idea but thread had already started to pull out after my first trail run. Other than that I love these shoes and used them exclusively for 4 days of hiking in Yosemite, they climbed Half Dome, Clouds Rest, and some other small hikes. I got them totally submerged in water twice and they did their job shedding water and drying fairly quick. The grip was also outstanding on the all the slick granite of Half Dome, they never slipped once.

I saw your comments on a few AT thruhiker channels that I follow. I've been using Altras for three years. Some I like better than others. I actually got so frustrated wimy Timp 1.5 heels giving me blisters around mile 90 of a 140 mile section hike that I took my Swiss Army knife out while taking a break at an overlook in southern Virginia and cut the heel cup almost completely out. I got home and considered giving up on Altras, but decided to try the Lone Peaks. Much better. I've nearly completely worn the sole down just walking around town. On trail, I did the northern 74 miles of the Long Trail without issue until my hamstrings gave out . I'm about to begin the final 500 miles of the AT, and hope that the Lone Peak 5.0 will be as good or better. Thanks!

Thanks for visiting my channel. I love the Altra Lone Peak and I use them since this year. Great shoes and sometimes I have the feeling I am flying over the trail.
Thanks for showing the new ones. Happy Valentien's Day to you and your Family.

I don't run due to health reasons, but lone peaks are my daily footwear - great traction. The 5 will be my next purchase.

thanks for the review. I made a comment on this shoe. I cant wait! I did buy the Lone Peak 4.5 and i hate them! i kept feeling my toes hit the toe box - i felt like i had to bend my toes. I did not size down. True to size. forget it... i wasted my money. I still go back to using my Lone Peak 3 !! I hope these 5 are just about like the 3 ...cant wait

Great review, looking forward to my 4.0's wearing out sooner than later! That sewn toe guard is a big step up.

200 miles on my first pair of 5.0s. So far, so good. Midsole is holding up so much better than previous iterations. Toe cap is still a cap, not flap! Max Track is wearing like crazy, but that is normal for me as I run on rocks and abrasive hard pack. Some wear in the typical Altra blowout spot, but not blown out yet. Size on this first pair is true. PS. You said "slippy"... Are you in PA by chance? Born and raised there myself. Boy I miss my perogies and Mon n' Pop shop square pizza!

Great review. I have never worn the Altra lone Peak. I might have to check into them cause I have knee issues and always looking for ways to prevent the pain.

I have the updated Lone Peak Mid Hiker coming to me soon (warranty thing) and I'm really hoping they will be more durable than the L P 4.0 Mid Mesh that I bought last year. Those things fell apart quickly!

Anyone have input on how the fit of the LP5 compares with the Topo MT-3?
