I agree. I think exactly the same way. v8 and v11, for nowadays. Because today JAVA-learning is cumulative. Whatever which version you'll start lean, you must know all it has, in other words, you must know all JAVA-8 has and the little additions of each version (if they are important for you work/study).

Been in this industry for 12 years now. Even 2 Years back I was seeing new projects with Java. That seems to have dried up in 2019. Most new Web projects are using node or python for back end. Java is used for Middleware software or API. Most jobs are in Web development, so javascript and python will rule the roost for atleast a decade

Wow this is my exact situation I learned Java a long time back (v1.1), but want to get back into it. So today I can download and install JDK13 but work through the features starting from 8 (after reviewing the basics of course)

Learn java8 it is everywhere and the people who are saying phython is best i suggest you to learn java8 stream lambda concurrency then you will know java is not only object oriented its also support functional programming like phython

One point missed from your side...
Java 11 onwards it is necessary to take license if you are using java 11+ in corporation. For fun it's okay to learn by cant use it if it is costing the company right??
