Java Development Kit: What Version of the JDK Should You Use?

Generally, when a new software version is released, we always download the latest version and we make sure we install it right away. However, the JDK isn't that simple. It comes in various versions and choosing which one to install can be confusing at times. So in today's video, I'll discuss which version of the JDK should you install and make use of. If you want to know more about it, please keep on watching.

Today's video is brought to you by The Learn Programming Academy's Java Programming Masterclass For Software Developers course:

My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.

In this series, I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.

Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm really qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

This is SO well made. I'm not only learning programming from you, but also how to make content overall. The energy and delivery, the presentation, the to-the-pointness. So good, thank you Tim.

If you plan on using Java personally, should you upgrade or stick to JDK 11? The main reason you gave for sticking to 11 was that your employers will use it, but since if you're using it personally, you won't have employers, should you upgrade?

Could you please update this information? Jakarta vs JDK 14 vs OpenJDK?

Doesn't Java offer back support so that any code written with JDK 11 should also work with a JVM that belongs to a later JDK version? If so, what kind of maintenance would changing to a newer JDK version require?

what about JDK 8? I tend to use that because I know Oracle's enterprise software like Weblogic and JDeveloper work well with it. I noticed it's supported until 2025.

I purchased your Java Masterclass video course at Udemy, and I really enjoy it. I'm learning Java for personal skill development, and I'm an absolute beginner. Giving that I'm not a developer working for a company it seems I do not have the opportunity to get JDK11 LTS, because it cannot be downloaded anymore without logging in to an Oracle account. Of course as a personal user I do NOT have an Oracle account. Nevertheless (and strangely enough) the latest JDK version 12 (even if it's not LTS) can be downloaded without having to use an Oracle account.

I'm just wondering if restricting JDK LTS versions solely to corporate users is a general practice with other vendors as well, or is it only relevant for Oracle?

Sorry if this is a lame question, I'm really new to Java, however I'm quite interested in it, especially if I can learn from such an excellent instructor.
