Managing student anxiety is about a lot more than making learners feel comfortable in the classroom—it’s about improving their academic performance. Anxiety hampers learning and retention of information, which can have a drastic effect on student outcomes. Burcu Karabina, a mathematics professor from Florida Atlantic University, has spent years managing the effects of math anxiety in her students. Studies show that 67 percent of college students experience high levels of anxiety in a math course. Karabina talked to Top Hat about strategies she’s used to surmount that anxiety, from involving her students in group work to getting students to participate in class via a classroom response system. By getting her students to do math together, says Karabina, she’s building their confidence and helping to improve outcomes.
