How is the Sun Dimming in Frostpunk?

In the New Home Scenario in Frostpunk there are two log entries which suggest that the sun is dimming; However this doesn't necessarily mean the the sun itself is dying, just that the observed light from the sun reaching the Earth is reduced; Here are a few explanations that would cause a similar affect
