Having just picked up my new iPhone 14 Pro Max, I thought I would share some of the images I've taken over the past few days, and also compare the iPhone camera alongside my Nikon Z6. The results may surprise you!

A note on megapixels... the '48' megapixels are not actually a full 48 megapixels, especially when forced onto such a tiny sensor. They are bear quad pixels, meaning 4 sub-pixels to make one pixel, so technically, this is still a 12 MP camera.

One of the best comparisons I’ve seen so far! You did a wonderful job! Thank you!

I chose right because the exposure was perfect on B and the clarity was better, to my eye, as well. You have more control with your Nikon so I suspected the image with better exposure and higher dynamic range was shot with it.

Great comparison, Paul! As a photography aficionado, I still like my full frame camera. But the convenience of bringing an iPhone is something else to be considered. During my last travel to Europe, I brought both. But my experience is that, I took most of my travel photos with my iPhone Pro Max and my full frame camera spent most of the time in my backpack. The deciding factor is, will I miss this shot if I got my camera out of the bag or simply, pull out my iPhone from my pocket and take it. With the quality almost the same, the opportunity to take the shot with the iPhone oftentimes is the decision which prevailed in my personal experience.

Thank you. I wonder about the iPhone 15 Pro max camera. 5x digital zoom. Will you please explore the video aspects of iPhone vs mirrorless cameras. Thank you!!

Hi Paul, another really interesting video .. as to which device I prefer, well its the one I have with me! ... I got the Nikon images ( just ) mainly due to what some call "colour science", but as you say computational photography with tiny sensors certainly has its place. For me, I try to use a phone when scouting for images and seeing what compositions look like as a way to get a "rough cut" of an idea, and a camera when I 'm getting a bit more serious. Of course a phone is much more convenient in many instances, so each have their place - but getting AN image that might not be perfection is so much better than NOT getting one at all.

Thanks for a great video comparing the new iPhone to a full-frame camera. I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max on order and one of the reasons I went with that model was for the 48MP camera. Having a phone that can take high-quality images in my pocket is really convenient for those times when I don't have my "real" cameras with me. That being said, I don't every see a phone replacing my "real" cameras any time soon. The ability to control exposure on the real cameras is still lacking on the phone. The ability to take RAW photos on the phone brings it one step closer but it's not there yet. I recently attended an airshow where I took over 1500 RAW images on my Canon R7 of fast-moving aircraft. That would not have been possible with an iPhone camera.

Gees, the Apple 14 is doing a great job of general scenery. But, I don’t think I’ll be throwing away my Nikon Z7 just yet.

I recently went on a trip overseas to South Asia. I had my iPhone 14 promax, as well as my canon 5D Mark IV with a 24 -105L lens.
Yes, the Canon 5D takes better pictures but here’s the thing. This camera weighs more than 6 pounds. I really got tired of lugging the thing around. The iPhone pro max using raw feature takes incredible pictures. Although it is not an endorsement for the Iphone 14 pro max . I phone takes Unbelievable night shots. As well as unbelievable video at 4K60 frames per second. You may not realize that if you want to take pictures of people, or quick shots on the fly, it is so much easier with a 14 promax. People are much less intimidated by an iPhone and approachable, since everyone has a phone, then pointing a canon 5D in their face and taking a photo. So do I love my Canon 5D? Yes! but it remained in my camera bag most of the time. Lastly, When it comes to telephoto the 14 pro definitely lags way behind after 6 X to 15 X. You start losing definition, resolution, sharpness, everything. Apple really really needs to work on this. Long reach lens, also I used a 70 - 200 canon L lens 2.8. This lens is awesome and beats any apple iphone 14 pro max telephoto feature hands-down. Thanks for the video. Great video.

Although the i phone performs very well, i was able to guess the correct answer in every photo you compared. The dedicated camera definitely has better clarity and detail when compairing identical photos side by side. Without the comparison shots, the image quality is good enough to satisfy the most common photography requirements. It does a pretty amazing job.

Great video as usual.
Personally I don't think a phone can ever replace even a point and shoot camera (for me), no matter how good it gets - unless they find ways to offer me the optical zoom capabilities of a point and shoot camera.
I love it how crypto scammers are infecting comment sections of practically each and every popular youtube channel 😡. Would request everyone to please mark those comments as spam.

Second comment. My son, the CGA expert, says the best cam is the one you have with you. I have a Canon R6, R7, and the really expensive lenses, plus a tired old iPhone 10sMax. Guess which one I always have!

It looks like the sky in photo A was a little processed unlike the DSLR which looked more natural.

I have tried several mini Tripods, none seem to be stable enough. I have a Canon Rebel T7, when I put the 75mm to 300mm lens on the camera they all tip forward. Have you tried anything similar to my set up on the Manfrotto that you use?

Paul, can you tell me if photos taken in RAW on the iPhone 14 can be transferred wirelessly to my laptop for editing or do you need the iPhone micro connecting cable to do so?
Thanks
Joe

I chose correctly. Although iphones are great, the images seem a little flatter than than dslr. Also, the landscape details are usually lost in my iphone photo.

close but its obvious. bcoz the image from the iphone looks FLAT.. i dont now how to say it but its FLAT... but Amazing to be so close to SLR

Yep, its just as I though the IPhone was A, iPhone images always come off as soft especially around edges thats probably because of the noise reduction Apple uses on high ISO images. I'd rather have a noisey sharp image than a smudgy blurry processed image.
