I am playing guitar for about 10 years now (at an intermediate level let's say) and rediscovered the version of this exercise where you don't lift the other fingers until you need to move them and I found it to be pretty hard at the beggining and way different from the lift off version. Doing it this way for some days now it got me more dexterity with the more complex licks and bends so I recommend checking that version too paired with some bending blues licks afterwards.

I'm having a comical time getting my ring finger to move independently

This is an excellent exercise. It hurts your ego and your hand in the beginning. I thought I was an ok guitarist, I’m better now and getting better every day. This exercise improves your entire game across and up and down the neck. I’ve been playing since I could physically hold a guitar. I’m 63 years old. Self taught, at least on string instruments. I was turned on to this exercise only a handful of years ago and it radically changed my ability but also the way I think about phrasing and expression. My fingers get to the thing I’m trying to say without so much trouble now if you know what I’m trying to say.😊😊😊

There is nothing more humbling than learning how to play the guitar for me 😂 Thanks for the exercise, I am so motivated to get better! Nice also reading the comments with different advices from everyone. Definitely checking the exercise without lifting my fingers until they have to move. hard and challenging but super rewarding when you can tell your skills are improving 😊

Pretty close to what I learned from my first instructor, except I was only allowed to move one finger at a time from one string to the next.

I recommend learning the message in a bottle riff

It's really hard for me for some reason; my pinky always stops the sound from being clear. I keep pressing on other strings which is frustrating. Any tips?

Going down the fret board is a breeze but then going back up starts to get a little tricky. Its a cool thing to learn though.

I have small fingers, I’m struggling so much 😭 My pinky just doesn’t do what it’s supposed to and can’t reach the top strings without the other fingers lifting and my whole hand moving 🆘

A better way to do it is leave your fingers on the last fret played until it’s time to play the next fret; don’t play the 4 on the one string then lift all your fingers up when they’re done playing, leave them in place and move them down one string when it’s their time. It’s a whole new level of difficulty and one dudes/dudettes should practice more when doing the spider walk vs. the easy way of just taking your fingers off the fretboard after each note is played. MHO.

Hey so I can play this exactly the way you teach it. I was just wondering would it be worth doing the exercise where you keep your fingers 3 out of your 4 fingers on the string above as you go down onto the neck string? So for example, 2 3 4 (on the top E string)...The numbers representing your fingers. Then .... 3 4
1 1 2
Instead of 1234, Index finger goes down onto the next fret and your fingers lift off to go down quickly onto the next string.

How do you do it without your fretting hand muting the strings???

The 4th finger always mute the string below the one it is holding. To avoid that I have to move up my wrist and I feel the tension on my fingers and wrist after practising. Is it normal in beginning?

Your not suppose to take your other fingers off the fret board when going to another string

Hey sir my fingers are like baby carrots, how can I do what you’re doing there?

My pinky can't do that. My pinky lays on its side when I try to put it on the string😢

Is it OK if my pinky finger jumps off when it is not used?? I have watched other tutorials whose main emphasis is on keeping the pinky ALWAYS on the fretboard and that is hurting my fingers bad and I feel stuck with no progress.
