Some top tips there. Especially the cold start, ive walked away for quite a few bikes, and cars for that matter because the engine is warm when i get there. I always ask for it not to be started on the day i look at it till i get there.

Thanks for this, I’m buying my first bike and have limited knowledge on bikes but have good knowledge of cars. This has been super helpful and now I know I can make an informed look at a few second hand bikes. Cheers mate!

To check for straight forks, I usually just set 2 steps back, take something that I now is straight and just visually line it up with the forks. Even a small curve can be noticed then! It also works with masts on sailboats ;-D

I deal in cars but presume bikes are the same - searching the VIN on the PPSR in Australia costs $2 on the government website. There are a whole heap of internet resellers who make themselves seem quasi official and charge $20 to $30 for the same thing. Many use the term REVS as that was the old government abbreviation in many states years ago and is effectively slang for PPSR. The worst I’ve come across was Pickles who will charge $48 for the search if you haven’t done it yourself when you go to auction a car. They are all the same, look for the official PPSR government site.

Not bad, very important points and to be honest a lot of common sense. You forgot the main one though . Be prepared to walk away don't let your heart or enthusiasm rule the day it may look great just what ya want or it's in ya price range but it doesnt mean it's the bike for you as it is with a list of issues ..
Glad ya back brekkie hasn't been the same without ya videos..

Just discovered your channel and love your work. I owned a CX500 Custom plus another 4 or 5 regular CX's & racked up a ton of miles in the 90s on them as a London Courier and they were great for that job. In fact, 'Chasbikes' the eponymous London bike repair shop at one period rented out at least 100 of them to despatch riders.
BUT they have the most horrible gearboxes. The times I spent trying to jam the bloody gear in after it jumped out. I think I'm still traumatized!

Great list, but lets see how I did lol
1. My K100 has been dumped on both sides which ruined both engine covers with deep gouges that cant be refinished.
2. Forks were actually very good, The seals didnt even leak
3. The forks may not leak but there are plenty of leaks mainly around the engine cover bolts
4. It was definitely complete...although clearly it hadn't been apart in TOO long considering how much filth was caked in it
5. Clean title
6. It started great, if anything my tampering with all the old seated rubber made it run worse lol

He is the first one I saw that mentioned a compression test. HUGE!! Poor compression/rings is the most expensive thing to fix. It is like a heart surgery. A kit off Amazon is cheap ($30) and even the lightest mechanic can do it. Just take out the spark plugs that are usually right in your face. I'm a fairly experienced mechanic, and it is basically the only thing that is a deal breaker for me.

Good list of things to look for, Dan. Probably also applies when looking for a girlfriend, too... especially checking for leaks and a rusty tank. 🏍👍🏍
