Measure yourself. Measure the pattern. Check out the finished back length and the circumference. Use the suggested fabric. Choose a pattern with no details…think t shirt. You will learn hemming and neckband finishing. You want to be successful with your first garment. Claire is bang on with her information.

I noticed I got a lot of compliments for simple dresses I made just because I moved the waist to my own natural waist. They were jersey, so quite a forgiving fabric horizontally, but getting the waist in the right place made all the difference.

I'd add under stitching and pressing to the list. I started sewing in the 1970s, under the supervision of my grandmother. Once out on my own, I started skipping things that I didn't think were necessary... I soon realised that all the things are important if you want a decently fitting garment.

The most important thing for me is to iron/press often and at each step of my project. I used to skip over that all the time, but it truly makes a world of difference in the quality of my garments.

When I was a teenager I used to wear one size smaller than I should because that’s the size my best friend wore and I didn’t want to be the “fatty”. I wish someone had told me at the time that I’d look thinner in my true size than stuffed into the wrong one! Great blog—thank you! 💕

Good sewing tips. Most people have a full rtw wardrobe and wear only 10% to 20%, of their clothes. Sew that 10% to 20%. No point sewing fancy dresses when you really need a pair of linen trousers.

Another gem of a video Claire. I’m guilty of every single one of these (except pre-washing, so I consider myself redeemed in that aspect)! Keep your videos coming because for me they are the most honest of all sewing content and as a novice sewist, I watch a lot of them. I’d much rather watch your content than live Facebook sewalongs, because the endless greetings throughout that take place annoy me, I’d much rather get to the meat of the subject, but that’s just me. I love the extra content you’re producing and I appreciate the work that must entail, so big thanks to you.

A toile is a great way to use your stash that are either a mistake or are not quite right now. I always have to make 1 or 2 buttonholes in the fabric then keep up the rhythm on the garment. Basting to match fabric's design or stripes is so....o satisfing. Thx Claire

I was lucky that I wanted to sew long before I had a sewing machine. I had plenty of time to watch countless videos teaching sewing before I made my first garment. I still made lots of mistakes (and still do) but I didn't make ALL the mistakes lol. Thanks for a great video Claire!

Something I only learned recently is to check the pattern cup size. A 46" bust for a B cup will fit completely different on a 46" DD cup body!

I love the information you provide. As a plus size beginning sexist you help me learn so much. Thank you for all the extra videos

So good to be reminded of the things we 'know' but 'forget' in order to speed things up. Thank you Claire!

Happy New Year! These are great tips. Thanks! My tips for washing fabrics are: on the DAY your bring your fabric home, like you do, serge the ends, then wash your fabric right away. Use the wash setting you plan to wash your garment with. I usually wash on a cold, gentle cycle because I want my fabric to last. Also, I add a colour catcher sheet or two to grab the excess dye so it doesn't ruin my other fabrics when I wash them together. It's also a good idea to wash each fabric separately so they don't bleed (just in case!). If you wash the fabric the day you get it, you'll be ready to go when you do want to sew it up. I don't press until I want to sew.

I made the Bardon dress!!! I had to make 3 toiles for the bodice and lots of pattern adjustments, then made a full toile from a bedsheet that is wearable. I adjusted the tiers to fit in the pattern on my bedsheet and am really happy with the result. Turns out one shoulder is shorter! After I have worn my bedsheet version a few times I plan to use a beautiful expensive chambray embroidered denim fabric I have to make it again.

I am an experienced sewer (for myself, primarily) but a refresher like this video is GOLD. Love your channel, Claire.

Great list of tips! One thing I've learned to do is to not rush. I get much better results when I'm focused, not stressed or tired, prepared and simply take my time. Ironing as you go is another thing that is worth doing. At the end of the day, the list is long and we're all guilty of something! LOLOL!

Thank you for the video Claire. So true on all of these, I recently started hand basting lots and it's made a huge difference to the finish of my garments.

I have ruined fabric by washing with the wrong settings, but I do prewash all fabrics after serging the edges. I make toiles now, but I did have some failures before I came to that practice. I also now adjust the flat pattern with known issues for my body. That helps when I do the muslin.

Great video! You are so right. I have been sewing for a very very long time and yes I tend to get lazy and am guilty of doing some of these. One thing I learned is when garment sewing always always prewash. All that hard work would be useless if I don’t. Thanks for sharing!

Another YouTube I watch is noel from costumingdrama and she uses her old muslins to make other smaller muslins. Dress skirts can be cut into pants shorts or bodice pieces. Bodice pieces can be used for facings or collars ect. Then when the pieces are to small to be used she cuts it up and makes stuffing out of it. That is what helped me realize it doesn't have to be waisted fabric.
