Disclaimers:

1. This mistype is difficult.

2. These are methods I've found helpful, not certain.

3. Not all ISTP INTJ mistypes have deep-rooted problems. These are patterns I've noticed, not absolutes.

4. Focus on Fe vs. Fi.

5. You won't be sure unless you're able to spend a long time around the mistype.

The main differences between ISTPs and INTJs which can be seen on their mannerisms is that INTJs tend to be more abstract rather than grounded in the real world at a given time. INTJs also tend to be more systematic whether it be dealing with systems they create in their head and systems seen around them in reality whereas ISTPs are more in the present moment.

INFPs mistype as INTP insanely often as well. Also heavily Ti child focused INFJs like myself have a high probability of mistyping as INTPs as well.

This is indeed a hell of a mistype. Just recently I managed to figure out that one of my best friends (someone I’ve known over *11 years*) is an ISTP and not an INTJ. I should have known better and stuck to the very first thing that clearly jumped out to me when I first met her, namely, that we seemed to speak exactly the same language (Ti), but she somehow needed to MOVE, to drive, to go mountain biking, to enjoy her food, etc.

However, what got me confused was many of her mannerisms, which I associated more with an INTJ. Firstly, to me she looked intuitive as hell, and even herself frequently claimed that “she could see the future.” I hated that, but a substantial amount of times, whenever she had a hunch, she was right. Secondly, she is constantly dismissive of others, elevates herself and her “intellect” (self-diagnosed with intellectual giftedness, although she’s never completed a single IQ test) and one of her recurrent quotes is “I am superior, I am better than others, because I am more capable.” This aggression and dismissiveness towards others frequently made her pick up entire group of people (people she perceived to have something in common) as targets, and attack them as you’d expect someone with an idiology to attack their enemy. But there was actually no ideology behind her attacks, it’s always been just anger. She also seems very ambitious, but that’s only because she wants status (to have another tool against people) and nice things.

This was actually one of the first things that rubbed me the wrong way about her being an INTJ. For all her ambition, there was never a plan. NEVER. Quite the opposite, I have witnessed many times (and always have been very impressed with) her ability to improvise. I cannot put into words how amazing she is to me in that regard; she spent a very long period of her live living in constantly threatening circumstances, and somehow she not only managed to overcome them without any apparent strategy, but that prolonged situation did not take a toll on her. She just went with the flow, dodging bullets, bills and difficulties like ain’t nobody’s business.

Another thing that pointed in the right direction is what you describe in your video: she doesn’t really have any fast and hard principles: what she has is a tremendous need for alone time, for being accepted as she is, and for being allowed to do her own thing (I should have known better, again, this was a crucial point of understanding between the two of us, something I knew we shared)

And finally, to me she was too good with “sensing” skills to be an INTJ. She doesn’t give a shit about mechanics, but again, I’ve never seen anybody (let alone a girl—sorry for the stereotype) driving so recklessly yet so confidently as her. Same goes for enjoyment of nice, sensorial things. She appreciated them in a way that I can’t understand, but she’s always in control, she’s savvy about them.

To me, the greatest confounding factor was the outward aggression (which I didn’t associate with ISTP’s alleged “chillness”) and the peacocking about career and status.

On top of that, Carl Jung has already separated IXXP and IXXJ apart into the introverted rational types and the introverted irrational types. The main difference between them is that IXXPs mostly focus on the facts under the reason while IXXJs mostly focus on facts beyond the reason. That's why ISTP has Ti as a dominant function and INTJ has Ni as a dominant function.

As an INTJ, I think I have understood your point and I can relate a personal example which in my opinion helps greatly in getting to the bottom of your posed quandry but I've already typed enough and to explain my POV properly I'd need to navigate certain detours so, maybe I'll come back to this comment board and shed some light on it in the future.

im definitely caught somewhere in this mistype, with the occasional INFJ or ENFP leaning saki results.

Regarding your hypothetical, I've actually had a very similr situation. Had a pretty cushy job where I could basically make money having zoom meetings and talking about a plight in life I have personally been deeply effected by and am extremely serious about. Coworkers were cool enough, but the big difference here is that I got really fake and condescending vibes from my superiors. The things they would say and have us do clearly conveyed to me that they represented the kinds of people that are part of the problem in this particular issue. I pushed back a lot, constantly voicing my complaints during the meetings and via email while completely phoning in the work (because it was stupid, useless, and didn't give us the proper respect of actually having experienced the subject of the whole job). Eventually they terminated me, which actually kind of upset me but not really. Upset me enough to push back and not just quietly go away, but not enough for me to actually miss the job or regret how I went about it.

When thinking about the hypothetical though I tried to imagine what is basically the most damaging thing I could imagine having to parrot that I staunchly disagreed with. I decided on a hypothetical job where I had to push "fat acceptance" and straight up untruths about nutrition and health and proceeded to have an anyeurism over the thought of this. Ive been a political survey caller for shit i didnt care about, but none of the people I called gave a damn or stayed on the line long enough for me to actually even talk about it. So I figured if my coworkers were super chill, agreed about the obesity problem, and the job was extremely secure it would be hard to decide to leave or not especially if it wasn't causing actual damage. But its hard to imagine this not causing damage. I'm so passionate about this that I cant help but bring up nutrition and health to people and even try to find a way to tactfully do it when speaking to my obese friends (without directing it at them as best I can). Guess I'm an Fi type, but I always figured I might be Fe because of how socially sensitive and aware of the energy of the room I am. But I have absolutely zero problem raising hell when there's good cause to disrupt harmony. You also hit the nail on the head with the origins of this mistype. Without traumadumping on you I certainly have had a lot of experiences and hangups that altered my approach to people and the way I view myself and the world, so there's this disconnect now where so many parts of myself are in a way compartmentalized but also constantly spilling over into eachother. I isolate and cut people off alot now and I antagonize people I disagree with online for fun sometimes now which is not something I used to do. But yeah, great vid. Definitely helpful in me figuring out my mistype

This was a must hear. I have known my type for years now, but Skimmerlit's detail into discerning the difference between ISTP and INTJ is impeccable. I liked the hypotheticals given on taking a job. I answered the questions as he indicates ISTP would, but I was more drawn by his conclusion that as long as the ideas that I disagree with does not negatively impact society, I could care less what the company decides. The only caveat is just how much engagement would be necessary and if having to engage is productive.

I'm an INTJ and I would honestly take the job with the most benefits, despite spreading misinformation. I wouldn't like the idea of spreading misinformation, but I wouldn't care about my coworkers at all. I would purely do it out of self-interest. Perhaps if you modified the example, with the same amount of benefits but the choice between spreading misinformation/getting along with coworkers and spreading accurate information/not getting along with coworkers, then it would be a better reflection of the types. INTJ could take the job out of developed Te and underdeveloped Fi, and also flexible morals (they tend to be neutral in D&D).

Forget tests and descriptions. Look at the function stack. First intraverted function is not usually very visible and requires getting to know someone a little. First extraverted function is usually pretty obvious. Look at how they deal with situations. ISTP is probably the most objective and grounded type out there, their Se preference is usually very strongly displayed. INTJs like to pattern things out and executing those patterns often times without thinking it through which could deal to some hilarious situations.

Another thing is if you're close to an INTJ (which is usually pretty hard to do) you will immediately notice that 1) they're very different in the close circle as opposed to with strangers; 2) They have serious anger issues. In the younger age it manifests as straight up violence sometimes, when you get older it becomes irritation, sarcasm, ignoring people. Reasons could be: messing up their plans (waiting for an unspecified amount of time and for no reason is a big one), illogical behavior, inefficient approach to work, lack of focus, etc: things an INTJ prides themselves on and appreciates in other people.

I think you give a great example with the job scenario.
My husband and myself are both intj. I've struggled to accept this to be true for over a year now. He comes across as an istp except he is very controlled. Our biggest differences would be multi tasking and reaction time. We are ranchers and work together everyday. It's an extremely risky business that is filled with countless long-term and day-to-day variables. I tend to see and analyze all of these things at once and he is much better at reacting immediately in the moment to what is happening in the moment.

I was literally thinking that I’m a sensor type then I found some vid how to know if you are the sensors or intuitive I’m get to the point that I’m intuitive person by learning on thing, really learning style you can’t hide how you are and you can’t fake it, because how wud you understanding a subject if you against your learning nature. ;)
Btw: I’m INTJ and I can say that for the first question I was same in a real situation I was going through a trouble time for a financial and I accepted a job that provided me with a good salary later that I found out all the systems at work is fucked I tried to make it change for a better I was just a manager not the high position of deciding to change a thing I remembered one day in the meeting there are something that we voted for what will do for a project in the next month and I knew that was a wrong stupid idea but no one agreed what I said, I was pissed if in silence and walked out that door slamming and next day I’m quit a job.

Many typists believe Shadow the Hedgehog is an INxJ, so I ran a poll asking whether he was an INTJ, an INFJ, or another type.

I think one got more votes than the other, but a few comments read that Shadow gave them ISTP vibes.

I ran another poll asking whether he was whichever INxJ got the highest votes, or an ISTP.

ISTP scored higher, and I'm wondering why.

Very relevant subject. I have such a mistype among my friends. Turned out it is a ISTP enneagram 5. Very intellectual and clever ISTP but a sensor anyway. Trick I used to find out is Se. ISTP never have Se issues most of the time (even low Se kind of ISTP such as ISTP 6). Example: ISTP can feel way more confident travelling the world on their own than anxious INTJ. Absent-mindedness is also rather a thing on the spectrum for Ni-dom as compared to Ni-third. Craftsmanship is also a thing to investigate.

So I have been rambling about my type for a year or more now and I am 90% sure I am an istp, and intj is one of the types I have excluded a long time ago . If I am not an istp, then an infj . I wouldn't take the job because 1- te nemesis : istps and intps both worry about wrong information spread according to the 8 function model of john Beebe as your nemesis function is where your worry exists -2- my fe
has been fed up with ethics heavily since a young age . To be honest though I would have taken the job unless you said that that information is serious . My biggest criteria in such things is will it harm others ? And also depends on the hugeness of the wrongness of the information . About the coworkers, i don't give a damn, as long as they are going to leave me alone, and in the worst cases, I can defend myself, I think this is fi demon not caring about my own emotions, although I would have loved to be accepted but as they are Immoral people anyway I don't respect their opinion of me . By the way istps are from the beta Chandra called the templars, these people's life purpose is to Insert integrity and strength of character in themselves and others.

Me looking at my high Ti and Ni questioning everything:

I've always thought there's something with that INTP/ISTJ comparsion, Si-Ne + strong Tx = somewhat similar superficially? They both can be very "neutral" types too.

These are some of the most in-depth MBTI analysis vids I've found, great stuff!

So I don't hate my fe, I am actually a fan of fe, but I was surrounded by high fi users for a long time and they care about their emotions and stand for what they want especially if they have ni as well and usually they do it in kind of a sneaky way, while I as an istp, I am ms. I don't care, so I felt I was losing and left behind and my fe couldn't compensate, so I learned to value it more. So yeah, kind of fuck people but I still love my fe .

Such intriguing thoughts. What's your opinion on Vladimir Putin ‘s type? People argue if he is an intj with developed se or istp with developed te

What if you take the job because of Te-Fi? You disagree with the ideas of the company, but do you care as long as it does not change you? Good money, good schedule, etc. I’d gladly take the job
