It's my internal emotional state that I'm trying to escape

Opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it's connection. What Dr. K said explains a lot and I forget who said that quote exactly.

I don't think I've commented on it yet, but I'm really thankful for the work this channel does to share knowledge about human psychology and mental health :

The short format especially is one I like to share a lot, because you know that it will be quick to watch, yet Dr. K is so well spoken and the editing so well done that the info hits how it should perfectly

Don't have much time for hobbies so having a smoke is just easier. Helps with waking up and getting through the day too

in my experience (very little) being aware of feelings is the only way to figure out why we are having these feelings. and once you figure out that, you can start conditioning your brain, unlearning any bad habits.

How are you supposed to start having things to look forwards to? I don't even know where to begin...

Story of my life with video games and adhd since HS

Obviously this is a Short video, so they might’ve delved into this, but it feels like an incomplete thought. Addiction stems from a need for escapism. That ties into your emotional state/awareness, sure, but it’s *caused* by external factors, not internal. That’s why you can get addicted to anything, and it doesn’t help that blatantly addictive consumables are super accessible and even advertised in the name of profits, foregoing human care. If we look at what makes escapism such a necessity in our world (our economic and labor structures, our lack of community and fostering on hyper-individualist mindsets, discrimination and lack of inclusion, etc.) and tackled those root issues, that’d be biggest thing we could do in the fight against addiction. It is not people’s intrinsic characteristics that make them susceptible to addiction; there wouldn’t be such intense escapism if we didn’t live in a world that caused the *need* for it. It’s better to channel energy in changing a bad system then to simply navigate it.

That said, meditation is great lol

So I decided to look up Dr. Volcow and she is a great-granddaughter of Leon Trotsky. Holy sh*t the world is small.

I've learned to emotionally regulate myself but I still have cravings for video games since I've played them for years at a high level. Am I deceiving myself if I give in to those cravings or can video games be a legit passion like some people play normal sports?

President Truman had a sign on his desk that said, "The Buck Stops Here". These days, all our "leaders" pass the buck. Nobody takes responsibility for anything.

Addiction is never a choice. It’s always something that just happens to people in certain circumstances.

Mostly true. I have a slightly differing experience however.
