Eragon covered this. Their magic system is based on energy expended. A spell that lifts a rock expends the same energy as lifting the rock physically. So saying "Your head is crushed" (words=spells) takes as much effort as physically crushing their skull. Their solution was to snip arteries in the brain, which used as much energy as pinching your fingers.

"Entering the brain like a house and turning all the lights off" is exactly how I imagined the Killing Curse working. In the Goblet of Fire, "the Riddles all appeared to be in perfect health—apart from the fact that they were all dead." This reminded me of a 1989 study, in which 10 rats died after 11-32 days of total sleep deprivation: "No anatomical cause of death was identified."

I always considered avada kedevra to be the pinnacle of premeditated murder, most murder is easy, knife, gun, rock, hands, any one of these is capable of taking a life. But AK isn’t easy, like the cruciatus you have to mean it, you have to want this life gone because that’s what the spell requires.
most killings almost always involve a certain level of disassociation. You have to be a pretty sick piece of sh*t to actively want to take a life just to take a life.

Avada kadavra is the opposite, you don’t disassociate, it’s probably easier if you know exactly who you’re killing and why, but to use it consecutively would require more than just a general disregard for life.. for lack of a better word you would have to *value* the very concept of taking a life.

In the Eragon series the magic system is a language that directly translates your speech into magical results. Literally you just say what you want to happen in that language and it happens, but the tradeoff is that it will tire you just as much as performing the action through conventional means.
