Setting up the XR18 / MR 18 for audio monitors with terms explained. Settings for wedges, IEMs, or headphones.
Monitoring is an important part of any musical performance. Understanding the settings of pre fader or post fader, post EQ, pre EQ, etc. will help make sure performers get the stage monitor mixes they need.
This live sound reinforcement tutorial discusses stage monitor setup but applies to studio audio monitor setups as well.

This video seeks to explain setting up the XR18 for monitors, as well as explain the terms as used in the process (and by the software) to understand why certain decisions are made with the setup options. This information is pertinent to stage and studio, bands and techs. That includes churches / Houses of Worship, traveling musicians, nightclubs, auditoriums, etc.. Portable or installed.

The same information is also relevant to the Behringer X32 and Midas M32 digital mixers which use similar architecture and software/GUI. Particularly familiar on those consoles with firmware updated to FW4.0 or newer.

I just did a Monitor Setup video specifically for the Behringer X32 and Midas M32. If anyone is looking for console specific monitor setup info for the X32/M32 then check out this video:
I also made an X32/M32 Monitor Mixing/Setup playlist centered around this new video:

One thing I found very helpful.. was making each monitor tab a different color... Makes it easy to tell what mix you are on because the faders all highlight in whatever color channel you are on.. So FOH would be normal/black... then Aux1 is red, Aux 2 is blue etc... You have all of your monitors coded yellow.. which helps.. but making each one different helps even more... makes on the fly adjustments a little easier to manage as you know instantly what tab you are on just by looking at the board.. Great video! I have been using the XR18 for 3 or 4 years now and have learned a lot that I didn't know from watching your vids! Cheers!

This was super helpful. I was just going to set up the aux outputs as pre-fader because this is what I've always done. I wasn't even thinking about the difference between pre-fader in the aux output tab of the I/O screen vs. the pre-fader setting on each input channel. Also, thanks for explaining the fact that pre-fader is post-compression and the impact of compression on monitors. Very useful!

These videos are great. I struggle a bit with perspective of from foh etc. Because like everyone in my area where the live music scene sucks, the musicians run sound from the stage. We make nothing and would still gladly pay a soundperson but with no healthy scene there are no sound techs. Cheers

Great info. Thank you very much. I was always used to the “old school” way with an analog mixers. I bought this version to upgrade and I’m so glad I did.
