In this video the scientist #neildegrassetyson in the podcast of #joerogan describes how his his college teacher was interested in the study of clouds of gas in the universe, and from that he founded a basis in physics known as #nuclear #magnetic #resonance #NMR. This led to the discovering of RMI the famous medicine scanner. Watch the video for the details.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an #american #astrophysicist , #author, and #science #communicator. Tyson studied at #harvarduniversity , the University of #texas at #austin , and #columbiauniversity . From 1991 to 1994, he was a #postdoctoral #research associate at #princetonuniversity ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a physical phenomenon in which nuclei in a strong constant magnetic field are perturbed by a weak oscillating magnetic field (in the near field) and respond by producing an electromagnetic signal with a frequency characteristic of the magnetic field at the nucleus ...

Magnetic resonance imaging is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body ...

Thank you to the guy who came up with this... saved my life... they found and removed a tumor in my brain 4 months ago... I am truly grateful 🙏

Nice of the editor to include a quarter second reaction shot of Joe

His Physics professor wanted to gaze into the universe and accidentally found a way to look inside himself.

I don’t care if it’s “irrelevant” or “too much, ” I like learning stuff like this. Let Neil be Neil

One of the simplest, clearest n best explanations for an mri I’ve heard to date. This guys a teacher, in the true sense.

Neil can literally just give you the most interesting mind blowing fact while also casually giving you the best simple description of an MRI I’ve ever heard

People often make fun of Neil saying that he thinks he's the smartest person in the room, but fails to realize that he speaks like that because he's a teacher for the masses. He inspires wonder and curiosity in science, and that's an amazing thing to have.

I wonder how much thousands of people got into scientific career because of him.

Neil is the type of person who asks a question to himself, answers himself and then gets shocked.

Sometimes Neil actually informs the masses in a cool way rather than stating the obvious

For context, Joe asked Neil how old is he.

He gave brilliant examples of a discovery and an invention.

this is actually the most clear concise answer to what an mri machine is i’ve ever heard - most of the time you get “yea it’s the one with the spinny magnets”

And, honestly, you EVER hear serendipity so well explained.
Saved my life too. Found lymphoma early enough to excise it.

Its an honor to work on these machines, to save lives, thank you

Most humble flex, “my professor invited the mri, but they didnt even mean too”

Im proud to say my uncle Bill Daily was one or the physicists to help design the MRI. He has since passed but its cool to watch people revel in his work (don’t think its the same guy he is talking about)

It was originally called the NMR Imager ... we had one at Barts in London with that actually written on the side of it ... it stood for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance followed by imager ... they dropped the "Nuclear" bit because the general public thought that sounded like it was somehow radioactive (nuclear merely means it's using the magnetic resonance of the nucleas of the atom) and changed the name to MRI .... it's quite ironic given that a standard x-ray is way more radioactive...

As a chemist, I'm more impressed how they turned NMR image of just some peaks, into MRI image with such clear vision of human tissues

Yo, that was the coolest intro to MRI! Would’ve loved to have him as my professor
