The economy of ancient Rome was a bustling one and in this documentary we look at the evolution and system of Roman coinage, their denominations and relative value, but most of all what was depicted on them. With an obverse and reverse side, a coin offered the possibility for two different images. These images were used to spread different types of messages to all citizens of the Roman empire, especially with the coming of the Principate. As an example we take a close look at a famous coin of emperor Vespasian, one the most celebrated generals in the Roman army and later emperor.

Absolutely fascinating. Coinage is one of those common threads of history that fascinates me, but I've never before seen them discussed in terms of social and legal effect.

Fascinating, absolutely fascinating, I didn't realise that there was so much to Roman coinage, and it's so clearly and well explained.

This channel is amazing because clearly demonstrates that people never change, especially those who gain power.

This is my favorite history channel by far, not only because it's highly informative but also for the visual representation, it makes the videos more entertaining as it depicts accurate scenarios and paraphernalia used at that time.

Rich people buy villas and cars, while if I would be rich, I'd be legit sponsoring such channels with thousands. The content is amazing!

First time I'm ever seeing a video from this channel and I'm impressed. You folks have that classical documentary feel, like those good old days, but one which condenses so much information. I like what I see.

There was a coin with a plant on it. A plant.
It was a natural and very effective contraceptive, and
added to any food it increased the tastiness a lot.
It was very difficult to grow, so found only in the wild and overharvested.
The last one when found was given as a gift to Nero, who ate it.

Extinct.

Except, a few years ago a small field was found in Turkey with plants that look exactly like the picture. They haven't tested for contraception, but did a little cooking and it made any meal much more delicious.

The location of the field is a secret, for obvious reasons. Every effort is going to be made to cultivate it. May become an extremely valuable crop!

Saw a vid on YT about it.
