Cross stitch -- gridding with fishing line

If you've ever wondered how to do your gridding with fishing line for your cross stitch projects, this video will get you on your way in no time! Using fishing line is a great way to grid fabric as it won't leave permanent marks on your fabric, it's inexpensive, and it's reusable! It's also perfect for linen and evenweave fabric, which can be harder to draw lines on. In the blog post linked below, I mention Easy Count Guideline (not Easy Grid as I stated), as well as Sulky Sliver metallic thread as other options to fishing line. Planing my first big project with cross stitch and have wondered if you can use fishing line instead of thread or easy glide so this was very informative, thank you

I just received my fishing line from Amazon. It’s called Kastking monofilament (4 lb. 300 yards). Easy to grid with. Thank you for sharing your gridding technique.

Lol 7 years later. Hope you answer. Thank you for this video. I want to go find some now. I just have a couple of questions. Will it stretch the holes? Also, are you able to stitch over it and then it just easily pulls out?

I started using some fishing line, I am trying a type I found in a sports store. Its heavy duty but smooth to pull through. Not sure if it will be good for linen, gonna try that too. I watched someone elses video that goes down 4 so that 6 are on top, so you will have a lot of line to follow and avoid hitting on top of the piece. I have always used markbgone but have had problems getting it out, so gridding with fishing line would be good if it works out.

This is a great video. How do you end the fishing line when done with the grid? When I secure with knots and then stretch the fabric, it pulls at the fabric where the knots are creating larger holes. And if I leave a length of fishing line, the thread gets caught on the extra length as I'm stitching. Any suggestions to prevent these two problems?

Hi! Have you tried it on black aida too? I have an 18 ct project, and struggling to find a thing enough washable white pen, they all make to broad lines.. but my thoughts is that nylon "clear" fishing line wont be so visible on the black aida?

what size milliner needle did you switch to? Does the fishing line size change with fabric count? Would you be able to use this technique if the fabric is linen? Thank you for the video. I found the information to be helpful and would use on my next project.

Would stitching with clear fishing line be too hard? I have some left over from a paper flower project and can't talk myself into buying colored line if I don't have to.

Hi, I loved the video, easy to understand. Question: if I grid the fabric do I still start stitching in the center or any area of my choice on the pattern?

Hi! Thanks for the videos. I’ve been binging them for the past few days. Can you use this gridding technique on evenweave or linen? Thanks.

Great video, very helpful! Do you iron your Aida before you grid and stitch?

Decided to grid with fishing line. Really bad idea as the dye comes out of the line and onto the fabric. Gone back to using Easy Count Guideline nylon thread.

Nice idea. But how can I remove it, after I stitch over it?

I had never gridded before but I was doing a large project and so had decided to do it after watching videos on it, yours included. When I removed my grid lines, you could see where the lines were, and especially could see the 4 corners of each grid, especially on the lighter areas such as skin tones, and other light colors. Can’t tell you how upset I am because this took me 2 1/2 years to stitch only to find this happened. I would never have gridded had I known this was a possibility. I haven’t washed it yet, but I’m really hoping it will help. Has this happened to you and, if so, were you able to get rid of it? I will, from now on, spring for the extra $$ for a pre-gridded fabric.
