Nice Job ! (on a difficult topic since as you've pointed out many times, role names differ from company to company and number of architects depends on company size)
Just as a reference, typical Architecture roles can be divided up as follows:

1. Enterprise Architect
2. Solution/Software Architect and Integration Architects
3. Data Architect
4. Security Architect
5. System Architect/Infrastructure Architect (can be on or off premise)/Cloud Architect (usually off premise)
- Network Architecture
- Hardware/Software Platforms
- Storage Architectures
- Disaster Recovery/Business Resilience
- Workstations

After years of applications I have a second interview for a systems engineer position later this week that is supposed to eventually evolve into a cyber security position. Wish me luck!

Excellent explanation Zach. I'd be interested in Service/Help Desk video from entry level to upper levels.

I feel like every organizations definition on the role of Systems Engineer is different, like two completely different roles with the same title.

So to my understanding this is basically what a "Infrastructure Engineer" is.. This type of position also goes well with IT Generalist w/specialization in some or many other Administrative Positions ie: Networking, Systems Administration, Database Administration etc. For those of you that are JACK OF ALL trades master of none with at least 10-15 years of REAL experience feel free to not claim impostor syndrome as you have earned the title of Infrastructure Engineer. The way i see it this is the Modern Day systems administrator who's worked on 1000's of problems and issues and has the understanding of how to implement all departments in business and technology together. I just earned myself a contract position doing this the average pays is 35-50 an HR depending on EXP and Certs and how much the person who's hiring you thinks your value is worth to their IT Department.

Got a email for a interview for “Systems Engineer” . I’ve held a variety of IT jobs but never a title of Engineer (which I personally associate with people who actually create things) . Looked up the description and it’s so Vague . My take away was it’s more a acquisition position, finding cost effective solutions for this organization. Which I thought were management and finance type jobs . Idk, many tech related jobs seem convoluted, like calling a janitor a “Custodial Engineer” .

Helps a lot...I'm a software engineer and looking to move and become a systems architect. I'm still not sure where to start or who to get guidance from. But this helped a lot.

Since I decided to switch careers and pursue IT, System architect has been my goal. I turned down a role at Dell because I didn't feel it was quite right for me at this time. I do want more experience, and I have an idea of where to go. Thanks for the video!

New sub here. Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been an accountant for years and I am miserable so I am considering doing something I actually want to learn and already enjoy.

System Architect
System Engineer
System Administrator
Help Desk/Desktop Support

This is how I look at the progression tree and your mileage will vary on how much time you'll spend in each area. Please note that some of these levels have multiples to them like Junior, regular, and senior Sys Admin. That spread right there can easily cover a decade of work. I myself am currently doing tasks to move myself into Junior SA role with my company by the end of the year. I've been several levels of Help Desk and Desktop support since 2012 so I'm mentally ready to work hard and take that next leap in my IT career.

Maybe I’m coming off salty or ignorant, but how I do gain experience in this field when I don’t have my own company fiddle with? In order to get experience you need experience paradox…
