Alternative to Reddit? Lemmy is Decentralised and Free to Self-Host, and Federates to the Fediverse

Lemmy is an open source link aggregator for the Fediverse. It provides similar functionality to Reddit, but you can host your own instances and federate with other Lemmy instances. It uses the ActivityPub protocol so posts (and even its Subreddits/Topics) can be followed from anywhere else on the Fediverse e.g. Mastodon, Beehaw, etc. The ActivityPub protocol has been approved by the W3C as a standard for open social networking. No-one owns the protocol, and access to its API will always be free.

Having different Lemmy instances allows for different moderation rules at each server instance (so have a look at this before choosing your instance to join), but posts to any instance are viewable, and can be responded to, from any other instance, as well as other social networks on the Fediverse.

In this video, I give some background and take you on a tour of the user interface and features.

Lemmy cant replace reddit because of the splitting of communities. It's the main criticism i have of the platform.
