Have you ever wondered how each state in the United States of America got its name? Why is Texas called Texas? How did Alaska get its name? Why are there so many “New” states? State names come from a variety of different sources such as names of their founders, names of nearby rivers, and names of Native American tribes or words. Let’s take a deep dive into how the 50 states got the names we know them by today.

States are (almost) listed in the order that they gained statehood, with the exception of North Carolina being moved next to South Carolina since their names come from the same source. South Carolina was the 8th state to join the union, while North Carolina was the 12th.
