The Marcia Funebre at 19:33 with Bernard Haitink will forever stay in my mind. Like in millons and millions of other peoples minds.

THANK YOU for this upload of the late, great Maestro Haitink conducting Beethoven. I've come the conclusion that with the exception of Beethoven's 9th, my favorite Beethoven symphony is whichever one I happen to be listening to!

The counterpoint!!!! Early in his career he realized he didn't have a natural gift for counterpoint. So he paid Haydn to create and grade exercises. He felt Haydn wasn't industrious enough in the grading, so he hired Albrectsberger (SP?) to take over. The second teacher was a the taskmaster Beethoven had been looking for! ... and here we are!

Very virtuosic group of musicians, good fit for Beethoven. Unexpected tempo in that final Presto, not sure how I feel about it.

I am glad that there are many who like Haitink's Beethoven. The tempo is less hectic than the 'supposed' metronome marking (60 bars per minute!). Note that the great maestro beat in triple time, which was what Beethoven wrote. Since it is ridiculous to beat at 180 beats per minute, other conductors, including supposedly great ones, don't bother. Less is more in Beethoven; ignore the insane metronome markings and follow what the score says. The level-headed logic of the great Dutchman prevails.

They play forte the whole beginning…so we dont get ANY sense of crescendo. Typical for bad musicians.

There is not ONE piano in the whole piece…..incredibly boring.
