Some view the Old Testament as spirit "upon" people and the New Testament as spirit "within" people... This change would enable the spiritually inclined to perceive the character of God more clearly.

The essential difference between the Gnostics and orthodox Christians is between inner awareness versus outer. The Gnostics look for God within, while the orthodox Christians favor looking for God without. In this sense Gnosticism is much closer to Buddhism. For example, there are sayings from the Gospel of Thomas, that could be Buddhist. I was very surprised to make this discovery.

I enjoyed listening to Elaine Pagel.

Her elucidation about the Holy Spirit representing the female aspect of God was quite interesting, and fits perfectly with Daoism, yin, associated with the inward. The Holy Spirit is the inner teacher, guide.

In this light, the Holy Spirit is what I would call the I AM. I would associate this yin aspect of God with faith, which manifests as perseverance and trust, action and stillness, doing and non-doing, resulting from the wisdom within.

In this light, the Father is what I would call the universal Intelligence. I would associate this yang aspect of God with grace, which manifests as synchronicities, serendipities and karma, the outward dynamic, the shaping, supportive and stabilizing energies of life, resulting from the greater wisdom with which we are one.

The Gnostics who understood correctly realized that spirituality is symbolic and inward. That was the heart of Jesus' teachings, as it also is the heart of Laozi's teachings, be aware of the outer, but tend to the inward, Dao De Jing 28.
