Factors that include soaring real estate prices across the country, an increasingly strong dollar, and political strife at home are combining to drive an increasing number of Americans to flee the country and purchase homes in Europe, specifically countries of southern Europe like Italy, Spain and Portugal. A recent Bloomberg piece highlighted three stories of Americans who have chosen this route, and the compelling reasons that led them to pick up and transport themselves and their families across the Atlantic.

Jimmy and America’s comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the advantages and disadvantages of becoming ex-patriots.

You probably shouldn't run from a dying empire to a colony of a dying empire. Both will fall.

There’s a story out about Americans moving to Mexico running from California real estate prices driving up real estate prices in Mexico and refusing to learn Spanish. How ironic…

You can buy a house in these small towns in Italy because they are "dead", no population growth. Over romanticizing will lead you down the garden path.

Funny how they screamed they'd leave if trump was elected. Biden was elected and now they're leaving for a better life

I get it. I moved. Living in a country with national health care gives such stress relief. And, yes, life is cheaper. I live in the center of a medium size city and walk everywhere: to my part time job, train station, my doctor, great family owned businesses and restaurants and have tons of friends both foreign and local. I hate visiting the states now. It feels like a prison.

Moved to the Czech Republic 12 years ago and never looked back. 3small kids, good job teaching English. We own a house and don't owe banks anything. The American dream is alive.... just not in America.
Sad.

The US is broken. We get taxed on our retirement savings, massive property taxes and of course, healthcare is a big FU from Uncle Sam.

My family is moving from Arizona to Valencia Spain in a few months. We're just gathering all the paperwork and stuff needed to get a Digital Nomad Visa. Can't wait to leave. USA is a bank pretending to be a country and I won't miss it.

I can't image Europeans being too happy about this.

I moved out of the USA about 7 years ago, because of all the division. Everyone walks around angry at each other. It's not a healthy environment to live in.

Left the States when Bush was elected. I saw this hell circus rolling down the road then. Besides the high cost of living where I live in rural South of France, I'm grateful for the quiet spot in nature I bought for less than a hundred grande.

Those are abandoned villages in Italy that you can basically take over for a minimal fee. The original people that lived there couldn’t explain to their children why it was worth living a rural lifestyle so they all moved to the city leaving the village abandoned. The same thing is happening in small rural communities here in the states.

Hey Jimmy, portuguese here, we have socialist regime and sardines. Also, these people are driving up the prices in Portugal. Portuguese can't afford to live in Portugal as a result of that.

You can’t just “move” to Europe. You need a specific visa if you’re not a citizen. The people who are moving there have

I fled the US in 2017 to West Africa, and have never looked back. We are sane, living by the beach, living our best life.

It’s funny that half the country was going to leave America when trump got elected, but never did, now that Biden is president everyone is leaving

I moved to Mexico City. Only wanted to travel from place to place, but met someone down here and am getting married. I don't blame anyone for leaving especially California. Nothing gets better from cost of living to quality of life. You only live once take advantage of your options.
