Parametric modeling in 3ds Max✨

Build a parametric stairs using the Data Channel modifier.

Create your stairs procedurally by playing with mesh data. The advantages of procedural modeling, easily modify the stair shape, steps count, and height at any time. No need to model from scratch ever again.

Follow the steps in this tutorial:

- Create “Plane” with a Length of “600 cm” and a Width of “30”.
- Set Length segments to “60” and Width segments to “1”.
- Apply an “Array” modifier.
- Set Count X to “20”. (Here you set the steps count).
- In the Transform rollout change Position mode to “Incremental”.
- Set Z value to “-15 cm” (here you set the height of the step, note: it should be a negative value).
- Apply a “Data Channel” modifier and click on “Add Operator”.
- Add a “Component Space” operator and set it to “Y”.
- Add a “Curve” operator. (This one will control the shape of the steps).
- Add a “Vertex Output” operator and set output to “Position”.
- Set axis to “Z” and change method to “Multiply”.
- Apply “Shell” modifier on top.

Worked in 3D for 4+ years. Very rare to see techniques I've never known about. Thanks!
