I have a 7'3 human brawler, hardened in years of slave cage fighting to the death since he was 7 years old. Master of hand to hand combat. Has become a legendary god of strength, he has statues of himself all through 2 sepeperate relms, his signature weapon is bar couch. Has faced demons, gods, dragons and come out on to every time... He is terrified of spiders. So much so that he is frozen in fear and nearly sobs uncontrollably if it's within 10 feet of him. He has picked up and thrown his own party members across the room to kill a small jumping spider.

Two of my favorite characters.

A h*rny teifling bard who could talk his way into anyone's bed but was actually extremely broken as a person, using s*x and humor to cover up the fact that he never trusted anyone after multiple abusive relationships and parties.

A Lizardfolk Goliath who was a monk /barbarian that only used WWE style moves and who's main weapon was a cast iron chair. Not the smartest but he had his moments.

Our healer was never specifically named as a Paladin, or any particular class, and he healed with the power of DOUBT. He would look you over, shrug and say "Oh it's not as bad as it looked" and tell you how many HP you regained xD
My tiefling rogue was a soft marshmellow of a momma's boy adopted by goat centaurs. He became a rogue because he fell in love with a thief.

I have a phantom rogue character with a soldier background -- learned her slight of hand as a child slipping money INTO her single mom's pockets and is VERY BAD at lying (negative charisma stat, very blunt and awkward), and is EXTREMELY protective of her 'team'. She's the sort to hand money back to people.

I have a tiefling hermit dream druid who's fascinated by civilization, having never really encountered it before becoming an adventurer, thinking of them as the "anthills of humanoids' since people are also animals and learning about cultures and such and the different structures they developed makes him curious and ask questions and he's a general sweetheart.

I made an emo water genasi bard. Because he was a genasi, his dark hair always seemed wet and he always had dripping eyeliner down his cheeks. He had this whispering voice and never sung, just played instruments. All the voiced spells were whispered. He seemed really edgy but was actually shy and loved to write romantic poems

Be a rogue who isn't in the biz to steal for themselves, but to wreak chaos by swapping out everyone's belongings. Even NPCs

One of my favorite characters came from a one shot. An 18 year old elf rogue who was raised in a human orphanage and thinks of themselves as human. The idea came from a bit of flavor in the PHB that mentions that elves mature physically at the same rate as humans, but culturally are considered children until around 100 years of age. Was really fun to play an obnoxious, overly self-confident elf who saw themselves as an adult despite being constantly sniped at the by the elf with the noble background.

In my longest campaign, our druid was a modron. Named Dru, short for Druid Unit 1, because he was the first modron to ever become a Druid.

His familiar was a sewer rat he summoned to help us escape our first meeting, which was Sigil city guards busting down the bar door and trying to burn down the building with everyone inside. The sewer rat was a girl, so we named her Sue, short for Sewer Rat Unit 1. Still some of the most amazing combat scenes we ever had involved a robotic bear on fire smashing the crap out of enemies while a VERITABLE tank of a rat soaked up more damage than any of the rest of the party xD

All good points, although I feel like too many people avoid cliches like the plague because they feel it's been done too often. Cliches are good, just make sure your charceter isn't ONLY your cliche.

The version of me I have is a Saiyan that isn’t afraid of some forms and isn’t afraid to show his emotions. It’s mostly my voice with a more deep sound. It’s mostly just a persona to use for chat bots.

I have a germophobic Ranger, an arachnaphobic Drow (to be fair, she was raised by Dragonborn, and her limited knowledge of Drow culture is all secondhand, ) a Barbarian who's very passionate about Koi fish, a Paladin who's hobby is cooking, and a Half-Orc with severe anxiety and intrusive thoughts, and that's just my player characters.

Notably weird NPCs include an Orc Barbarian attempting to create a breed of dairy aurochs that can be ridden into battle, a Githyanki Fighter-Bard who keeps wanting to make her dead enemies into jewelry but is otherwise a ray of sunshine type (she does NOT get along with others if her species, ) a very tired Githzerai trying her best to reign in the afore mentioned Githyanki that almost never speaks but is somehow still really popular with my players, two dragons pretending to be elves that hate each other partially because they had the same idea, and a priest who's actually a Rouge rather than any sort of divine caster...

Honestly didn’t even think of making my rouge greedy in my first campaign. He gave 40% of his gold as soon as he earned it as an offering to his god.(Vhaeraun) He also kinda misunderstood funeral rights and started to collect body parts of dead people / people who died who’d helped him incorporating into weapons/ loot he associated with them. (if he becomes a great hero one day ha can attempt to resurrect them to repay their help! :D).

I have a hexblood dreams druid. Their most prominent quirks, that we joke over, is that they dislike the church (because, after turning down healing from them, the church was sneaky and healed them anyway, so that too generous act left them off put) and that they hate paperwork. The hilarity is in how much paperwork they need to do for the group anyway. See. My druid grew up raised prominently within fey society and knows the ins and outs of the rules and expectations of it and is a bit of a deal maker trickster, despite the dump stat charisma. The entire party are fey but less experienced (or have amnesia) and don’t quite have that same knowledge associated with being fey. To make sure the deals are honored, even in material plane society, my druid draws up paperwork. It’s also thematically relevant because we aren’t so much adventurers as we are craftsman/artisans/merchants who do adventuring stuff as a side gig. Honestly I love the hilarity of being innovative with pranks that highlight the party’s fey nature while still being charming. These two quirks just really sold how much deals mean to my character and how the unbalanced nature of some generous acts are confusing to them and how they are willing to do something they hate just to insure that their deals are honored. And yes, most of the of those deals are pretty harmless. Mainly it’s contractually obligating someone to be their, and the party’s, friends. Just figured I would share because it’s been so much fun to add this quirk in. (I do have more but these two are the most fun and tend to inform a lot of decisions the group makes).
